What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

How beautiful is Helsinki’s central library, Oodi?
A long building with gently curving wood panelling across the front that twists above the entrance to provide cover above glass doors. The plaza in front is almost empty. Blue sky above. Under the wood panneling in front of the entrance. Looking along the glass doors which reflect the fall colored trees in the park across. Under the wood panelling in front of the glass entrance. The wood twists along the length of the building until it meets the ground.

The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

This incredible piece of crop art (made entirely of seeds and grains like wheat, amaranth, barley, etc.) from the MN State Fair has been circulating a lot. The artist's statement, and the Picasso that inspired her, are important additional context.
“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there
was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics
of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own
resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code:
‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’” Jennifer Nelson

The piece is made entirely out of crop seeds (rice, amaranth, wheat, etc.) glued to a board; its center is a resistance loon and the figures all around are based on Picasso's cubist style. One carries a sign that say ICE OUT. Alex Pretti and Renee Good are also depicted.Picasso's "Guernica" -- a large, cubist representation of the horror of war occupation with figures stretched in every direction

#ResistanceRoots Mareta Nelle West was born on this day in 1915 in Elk City, Okla. She was the first female astrogeologist, known for choosing the landing site for Apollo 11. She transformed a workaround she developed to overcome gender bias into a unique ability to map the surface of the Moon. /1
Mareta Nelle West. She navigated the gender bias of her era not with outward anger or subversion, but with emotional stoicism, professional warmth and a positive outlook on life. Those who knew her often noted her bright demeanor. To preserve her happiness, West became a master of compartmentalizing her professional struggles away from her passion for science. By keeping her eyes fixed on the grand, timeless scale of the Earth and the Moon, the temporary social biases of mid-century America seemed small and manageable. She maintained a joyful demeanor because she felt lucky to spend her brief “instant” in time charting the solar system.

Driving through Värmland, Dalarna, Härjedaland, Jämtland on the way to still greater adventures. Seen: 1 moose, 2 ptarmigans, 27 reindeer, the only identified post-glacial meteorite crater in Sweden (Torkratern; 2000 years old; there should be 40-50), and beautiful landscape.
The screen on the back of a DSLR camera showing a reindeer in profile with a massive set of antlers. Standing on the path around the edge of a 2000 year old crater in the middle of a sparse pine forest/heath. There’s a pile of large cracked (bed?)rocks in the center. It’s 40 m in diameter and 5 m deep. A scenic view across heath, meadows, tundra, to distant mountains in the middle afternoon. The colors of vegetation vary from green to yellow to purple.

I think this is a great point. Debugging is an important skill with lots of applications and you don’t develop it as well if you are always asking someone or something else to find the solution for you. I tell students struggling up to but not over the point of frustration is part of learning.
