Just back from a great two week trip to Finland. Got to visit and give a seminar at Metsähovi Radio Observatory. They’ve got a 13.7 m dish in a raydome participating in European VLBI and soon to have an upgraded triband receiver…
View of the pedestal and support structure of the 13.7 m illuminated inside the raydome. View of the Metsähovi telescopes under an overcast sky. The raydome is on the far left side of the image and two small radio dishes are in the center and front. A dirt road wraps around to provide access to the dishes.

Fab story from Margaret Hamilton, RIP, showing why Science-Mums are brilliant scientists! When innovating at the cutting edge of technology, it's so important to bring together a wide range of lived experiences. Sad that only ~20% comp-scientists are female 👩‍🔬🧪 ℹ️: www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
Right: A woman looking very cool in a 70's dress standing next to a massive pile of very thick books
Left text: Did your life as a software engineer and a mother ever collide?
Often in the evening or at weekends I would bring my young daughter, Lauren, into work with me. One day, she was with me when I was doing a simulation of a mission to the moon. She liked to imitate me – playing astronaut. She started hitting keys and all of a sudden, the simulation started. Then she pressed other keys and the simulation crashed. She had selected a program which was supposed to be run prior to launch – when she was already “on the way” to the moon. The computer had so little space, it had wiped the navigation data taking her to the moon. I thought: my God – this could inadvertently happen in a real mission. I suggested a program change to prevent a prelaunch program being selected during flight. But the higher-ups at MIT and Nasa said the astronauts were too well trained to make such a mistake. Midcourse on the very next mission – Apollo 8 – one of the astronauts on board accidentally did exactly what Lauren had done. The Lauren bug! It created much havoc and required the mission to be reconfigured. After that, they let me put the program change in, all right.

A funicular and a ferry in Turku., Finland.
View out the window from the top of the funicular looking down the track. City buildings are visible in the distance but nearby is dominated by fall colored trees. Light is low and the sky is blue. View looking down river from the side of a ferry. The ferry railing and a life saver are visible. The low light close to sunset reflects off the buildings on the other side of the river. On the near side sailboats are tied up along the bank.

This is the second time this has happened. First time was from my personal email address (but I didn't take screenshots). It took my perfectly well formulated email and change words and added typos! "bureaucracy" became "authority". I think I looked like a nut job, but no one said anything. 3/5

Help. Anyone know what the hell Google is doing to my emails?! (1) I write email & it looks fine (2) I hit send and then there are bullet points all over the friggin' text that *I* DIDN'T PUT THERE (3) colleague replies and I see "World Cup" in her text (wtf not at all related) should be "VM"...1/5
Screenshot of an email exchange. Email sent from gmail has random bullet points added to lines including the signature. The words "World Cup" are highlighted in the reply. It doesn't make any sense in the context of the email or grammatically.Screenshot of email exchange my colleague sees. "VM" is highlighted because it is the correct text, unlike "World Cup" in the previous screenshot. Also highlighted are the bullet points that she doesn't see in my originally sent email, but only after expanding the email chain in her reply.

An AI-driven tsunami of rising submissions is overwhelming the moderators of @arxiv.bsky.social . In response, they are limiting each researcher to uploading no more than 2 new preprints per month (co-authorship doesn't count). The striking part is this plot of submission numbers per month. ☄️🔭⚛️🧪

If you've lived in D.C. long enough, you've likely encountered Nekisha Durrett's work. And yet, she has avoided *becoming* the story. But as her sculptures have grown larger, so too has the pressure to be in the national spotlight. My profile on the artist for @51st.news explores this tension:

Her new Obama Center sculpture honoring Harriet Tubman has thrust one of the District's most talented artists into the national spotlight.

What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

How beautiful is Helsinki’s central library, Oodi?
A long building with gently curving wood panelling across the front that twists above the entrance to provide cover above glass doors. The plaza in front is almost empty. Blue sky above. Under the wood panneling in front of the entrance. Looking along the glass doors which reflect the fall colored trees in the park across. Under the wood panelling in front of the glass entrance. The wood twists along the length of the building until it meets the ground.
