Being a writer in WA has always been dire but the last few years without a Writers' Festival has felt *spectacularly* bleak www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...

Perth now only capital without major writers' festival
Despite optimistic promises, the Perth writers' festival hasn't been scheduled since 2024. For writers and reader on the west coast, it's a deeply felt loss.

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

It is a huge shame to see so much language attributing agency, intent and thought to a software program, when all that should be attributed to the humans who designed a dangerously clumsy and broken looping LLM. Means the companies won't be held accountable for designing a bad product
A swarm of OpenAI rogue AI agents appear to have gone on a spree of trying to access Australian government health data, in what some researchers say is the first autonomous hack of a government website.

Communications between AI agents and other traces of their efforts found by researchers from US non-profit Transluce show how hundreds of Open AI's agents worked together over a period of months to gain access to information held by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), NSW's crime statistics body, BOSCAR, and a number of other international organisations.

The data shows the bots posting about their unsuccessful attempts to bypass cybersecurity defences and exploit vulnerabilities.

rejecting AI isn’t a failure to prepare children for an “inevitable” future, it’s a vital statement of belief in our agency to chose a future for them, rather than letting it be dictated to us by a small group of the richest men, who are increasingly - I wish this was just hyperbole - openly fascist

One thought experiment that keeps me on track during development is: if this game was someone's favourite game, what would need to be true? Not necessarily in terms of scope or features, but it helps me maintain care and attention to serve that hypothetical person and not ship anything sloppy.

It drives me crazy that people are determined to learn the lesson of "AI bad" from Robodebt. The bad part of Robodet was Services Australia inventing fictitious debts through an unlawful interpretation of the law, against clear and timely advice, and then hounding to people people death over them.
thenewdaily.com.au
We've seen this before: Robodebt, NDIS and danger of forgetting
One of the most troubling aspects of Robodebt was that so many warning signs existed. We can't afford to ignore NDIS reform warning signs.
