Call it the NACCification of public services. It's the Secret but for government - announce a service and hope the universe delivers it. Today marks the start of Thriving Kids, a NDIS complement in the works since December 2023. What does it offer in the ACT? A phone number to call.

It's impossible to take the Australian Government seriously when one week they'll talk breathlessly how AI will be a revolution in productivity, then the next week panicking and claiming Medicare got hacked because an agent accessed some public data through a public portal.

Robodebt and the limits of learning: exploring meaning-making after a crisis
The flawed Robodebt programme, and its subsequent exposure through a Royal Commission, represented a serious crisis in Australian public administration. A vital task for leaders after a crisis is c...

Still boggles the mind that ~2 weeks before the system goes live, after already being delayed 4 months, someone in the department actually compares the lego with the IT business process side by side and asks hey why don't these two things align

the average senate estimates experience is spending 12 hours in a waiting room in APH chatting with your colleagues then being told you've been released, having never been in any danger of making it onto camera let alone speaking at the table

Albo already doesn't need to write his own speeches - he has PM&C and PMO for that. Kinda like being surprised that billionaires don't use a washing machine. They don't need a labour saving device when others' labour is already effectively free for them.

It drives me crazy that people are determined to learn the lesson of "AI bad" from Robodebt. The bad part of Robodet was Services Australia inventing fictitious debts through an unlawful interpretation of the law, against clear and timely advice, and then hounding to people people death over them.

We've seen this before: Robodebt, NDIS and danger of forgetting
One of the most troubling aspects of Robodebt was that so many warning signs existed. We can't afford to ignore NDIS reform warning signs.

Love to see our cognitive elite put out a product with immediate obvious flaws such as running their AI over every single article stub the Guardian has ever put out and complained that political cartoons and blog episode descriptions don't include links and sources.

If your criteria for a central resolution mechanic is “roll a d20, add modifiers, higher than a DC = success", then PbtA absolutely has one: "roll a 2d6, add modifiers, then you and the GM hash out what happened but a higher roll is typically better".

part of the problem with talking about australia's social welfare scheme is that it is so very complex. which leads to claims like this on a random johnmenadue . com article, claiming that private hospital insurance doesn't cover in-hospital medical services

It's quite remarkable just how terribly the obsession with means testing and offsetting saves has ruined the ability of the social security system to make payment in accordance with the law.
