Women workers are suffering under the Trump economy – and they know it | National Partnership for Women & Families
Nearly two years into Trump's second term, a smaller share of women work and their approval of his economic policies are near record lows.

This means making sure that people are paid fairly and protected from discrimination and harassment. It means passing laws to support care responsibilities, like paid leave, so workers don’t have to choose between a paycheck and their loved ones.

Rather than building a system that works for the ultra wealthy at the expense of workers – especially working women – policymakers should create an economy that works for everyone.

Kate Gallagher Robbins @kfgrobbins.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That’s because women know this economy – which exploits working people to benefit the powerful – is being driven by the Trump administration’s policies which are keeping wages low and allowing discrimination and harassment to flourish.

So it’s no surprise that women sharply disapprove of how the Trump administration is handling the economy. Women’s rating of the government’s economic policies has once again bottomed out at a nearly 50-year low.
Line graph entitled "Women's ratings of Trump's economic policies are historically low" showing women's ratings from January 2024 through August 2026 of the question, "As to the economic policy of the government - I mean steps taken to fight inflation or unemployment - would you say the government is doing a good job, only fair, or a poor job?" The line shows that in 2024 women's ratings hovered between roughly 75 to 90. Beginning after January 2025 when President Trump took office, women's ratings plunged steeply and have been at or below 51 points since March 2025.

Women’s job gains since January 2025 have also been meager: they have added fewer than 36,000 jobs/month. And the one bright spot for women’s jobs–the health care sector–has a bleak future. Trump’s cuts are projected to cost as many as 1.65m jobs by 2029 – primarily driven by Medicaid cuts.

Today’s data mean that close to two years into the second Trump Administration, a smaller share of women are working than in January 2025.

But pulling back the curtain reveals things are even worse for Black women. Their unemployment rate jumped dramatically to 6.8% in September, driven by more Black women joining the labor market but not being able to find work.

This is not to say women have been stagnant. Over the last 80 years the share of women in the labor force has boomed, propelled by policy victories that have created opportunities for women. Today, women hold half of the jobs in the economy.
