NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.

Who was the jerk that decided to make microwaves where you have to push "time cook" before entering the time? We know your machine can do other things, but 95% of the time, I just want to zap my food on full power for an amount of time. Why would this ever not be the default mode?

The strange intolerance of the academy from Thiel-adjacent folks in Silicon Valley has had folk game theory, folk evolution, folk behavioral sciences, folk philosophy etc come to define conversations around tech policy with AI and it truly sucks.

Would any Catholic lay people in dioceses where confirmation age has been lowered to at or below the age of seven care to share your experience of that with me? (I'm not looking for clergy input and especially not for a clergy explanation of how the people have received it.) DMs should be open...

Happy Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross! Y'all ready for the apocalyptic turn? (In the lectionary I mean - this book is such a good resource)
Page from Words Without Alloy that reads:

The Arrangement of Ordinary Time (IV)

Before the meetings, Schürmann envisioned that the last sixteen Sundays of a single-year cycle would be given to Matthew. Then the revisers envisioned that a third and final group of Sundays would begin after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14. They wanted these readings to have an eschatological color drawing from the apocalypses of the Old Testament books of Isaiah, Daniel, and Zechariah and New Testament books such as Revelation, the letters to the Thessalonians, and the last judgment scene from Matthew 25.
Similar passages in Advent would focus on the messianic sense of eschatology.298 Commentary on the first draft noted the inclusion of eschatological parables of Matthew, eschatological sermons and parables of mercy from Luke, with the judgment of Christ the King at the end.

Commentary on the third draft explained more:
Thus naturally are found in the last Sundays after Pentecost the eschatological theme: for the last chapters [of the gospels] before the Passion treat of eschatology in a more or less extensive way. In the year of Matthew are found eschatological parables, such as the parables of the ten virgins and of the talents, and the prophecies of the Lord about the last judgment are best placed on the last Sunday of Christ the King of the Universe. The years of Mark and Luke also offer eschatological pericopes for these last Sundays.

The two letters to the Thessalonians, originally assigned to Years A and B, would come in the last Sundays, due to their eschatological character.Cover od the book Words Without Alloy: A Biography of the Lectionary for Mass by Paul Turner

Lying is so natural for so many people. I just can't relate. And in this case, as someone of a similar age, I genuinely take offense. Say what you will about Xers and Boomers, but I don't think they're out here embellishing their stories of the Challenger explosion and JFK assassination for clout.

I dunno, to follow his ways "exactly" and love him with all my heart and all my soul seems like a lot actually...
Reading from Midday Prayer, Liturgy of the Hours
Deuteronomy 10:12
What does the Lord, your God, ask of you but to fear the Lord, your God, and follow his ways exactly, to love and serve the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all your soul?

“Breaking free from the culture of power, and tearing down the walls that separate human beings from one another, is never a betrayal of our families, towns or traditions. Instead, it means freeing them from their ghosts, from enemies invented out of fear or ignorance” Pope Leo!!
We may not be understood, even by those closest to us, as happened to Saint Francis.
Yet, breaking free from the culture of power, and tearing down the walls that separate human beings from one another, is never a betrayal of our families, towns or traditions.
Instead, it means freeing them from their ghosts, from enemies invented out of fear or ignorance and from the violence with which people seek to impose their own limited order on a reality that surpasses us on every side.
To trust in God is to rediscover, like Francis and Clare, a world of brothers and sisters to cherish and serve, not to exploit and dominate. Not a world to defend, but to embrace.

Where does the second half of this definition of empathize come from? Since when did codependency (or whatever this is) become an essential aspect of empathy? "To empathize is to enter profoundly into the experience of another and to endeavor not to hurt that person's feelings."
