I think there’s something special about Black Americans both being aware of the worst this country is and nonetheless working for its improvement because we also know how special it can be. There are forms of patriotism that aren’t built on ignorance.

abundantly clear that this administration takes “discrimination” to mean “any regard for minority communities” and treats “merit” as a synonym for “white (and preferably male)”

The worst part: this 6yo girl needed her father's care and empowerment, and he deliberately put her in harm's way. Now she's dead. I don't think anything good will come from this. I don't think people infecting themselves with measles will learn from this. I just feel bad for the kids.

Let's go back to basics. Elon Musk has de facto control of FDA, and is threatening to fire people there. He runs Neuralink, but Neuralink needs FDA approval. Okay. Pause. If you aren't screaming "🗣️CONFLICT OF INTEREST🗣️" at the top of your lungs right now, you need to recalibrate your ethics.

Republicans understand this by intuition, use it, but deny it vehemently. Democrats (may) know this theoretically, but do not understand it.

Looking back on this thread, I know someone is going to say, "You're giving the dems a pass." No, I'm not. By all means, let's force our reps to do better. It's just that so many folks are literally harming women, PoC, queerfolk, PWD, and yet they feel so smug about their slam dunk bsky posts. 😬

The truth is… ignorance, arrogance, and bigotry are core to the US' identity and have been for a very long time. The more we try to root it out, the more it burrows itself in us. That's the problem. Some of y'all need to look inward and make the same demands of yourself that you make of the dems.

I can't count on most folks to have my back when someone is being explicitly racist toward me. I have seen colleagues and friends act worse than the dems they condemn in moments where I needed them to have my back. What good is it to dunk on the libs when you're a bad ally?

Tim Brown, PhD @keyofnight.bsky.social · 06/03/2025
Not saying the dems couldn't do more — they can and must! I'm just tired of the same old "the dems suck" arguments I've been hearing for 20 years? I know it feels good to call out the pathetic little signs(😩), or fence sitting on Palestine (😤), or the kente cloth kneeling (😬)… but…

Tim Brown, PhD @keyofnight.bsky.social · 06/03/2025
Unpopular opinion, I think some folks spend way too much time complaining about the dems in leadership. Most of the folks complaining are the same kind of milquetoast liberals that dems in office are, making the same kinds of mistakes, impacting my life just as much.

Algorithmic gaslighting has always been a thing, it's just automated now. Our brains are on a conveyor belt that feeds a meat grinder of procedurally-generated discourse, only to be fried and consumed by marketing firms and their clients. Jane, stop this crazy thing.

"Changing the system would mean abandoning the myth that this is the way things have always been, and the way things have always been. Abandoning that myth would cause the whole cavalcade of myths to crumble, and possibly unmake the American Dream and everything built atop its shaky foundation."

Like clockwork, the brain-drain begins. All any country has to do is fund a program recruiting researchers. Many countries already have these programs in place. This country was built on the backs of my ancestors, so I have no intentions of leaving right now. That could change, but I hope not.

I've been part of reviews for DoD, NIH, and NSF that have gone the extra mile to listen to veterans and people in active duty so that we can make healthcare better for them. But, yeah, sure, treating soldiers and vets with respect is "woke." Okay. Sure. Got it.

I'm on a project in this database. What's our crime? Our brain science project has men and women working on it? That we are doing research on both women and men? What? This database was made by people who don't know anything about science, want to destroy science, and want all of us to suffer.

Have y'all actually looked at the NSF DEI hit-list? It's an excel spreadsheet that sorts NSF projects into the categories: "social justice," "race," "gender," and "environmental justice." Wow. If your scientific project mentions "women" or "gender" at all, it's "inefficient," woke, DEI, etc. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I often explain to non-philosophers why we can't just appeal to dictionary definitions, but when philosophers do this, it raises red flags. It's easier to dismiss accusations of racism if your concept of racism is limited.

Kendrick Lamar is a Pulitzer Prize winning rapper the first one to have earned that distinction. To say there was no "larger statement" within his performance when that statement was so patently obvious? That's epistemic violence. "40 acres and a mule this is bigger than the music," anyone? 💀

AI systems are largely just bundles of statistical models and procedural logic arranged in ways that accomplish work. They lack positionality, identity, motivation, experience— the very things that are required for having a voice. If/when AI truly learns to speak, we'll be in a different world.

Now, ask yourself the same questions about pilots. Do you think that Black pilots are less qualified than White pilots? Why do you think that? Do you think Black pilots don't get trained? Why do you think that? (I feel like I'm going insane here, and I know I'm not alone in this.)
020
Tim Brown, PhD @keyofnight.bsky.social · 01/02/2025
And where is that racism coming from? It's coming from people thinking that Black people are somehow less qualified to be doctors than other folks. If you don't believe racism exists, just think, "Don't I believe that Black people are less qualified? Just because they're Black?" Surprise!
120
Tim Brown, PhD @keyofnight.bsky.social · 01/02/2025
Then you should remember that most Black people have to work twice as hard to get to where white people are. Your Black doctor went through 3 years of intense med school, 2-5 years of residency, (probably) 1-2 years of fellowship, and pass their board exams …all while dealing with racism.
110
Tim Brown, PhD @keyofnight.bsky.social · 01/02/2025
A PSA: The next time you're worried that your doctor is unqualified because she's Black, ask yourself… why do you think that? Do you think that Black doctors don't get trained? Why do you think that?
