Today is Andy Burnham’s first party conference speech as PM. We’ve taken your messages from the mass lobby on tour to Labour conference in Liverpool, with our friends at @transactualuk.bsky.social and @scottishtrans.bsky.social We aren’t going anywhere.

A significant trend here is that most of these technologies were being developed by states and academics, rather than private companies funded by venture capital who demand exponential growth. Let's kill several birds with one stone and do away with tech oligarchs.

Would love to know what "disagreeing well on gender identity" would look like. Pretty sure the answer is accepting factually incorrect premises, not calling bigots bigots and nobody being mean on bsky. Sorry about my standards ig. Is this article "disagreeing well"? bsky.app/profile/keyn...

I can't stop imagining! What's next, lawmakers without a democratic mandate? Unthinkable.

I would make a joke about how this person is paid to write about politics for a living and all my impostor syndrome is cured, but genuinely think it is an impressive skill to turn your brain off selectively enough to come up with this. Not a useful skill, but I sure couldn't do it.

Imagine if a right wing party openly wanted to "overturn" a law. What if even more than one?! They'd have to write down it in some sort of.... manifest of changes to the law. Does that make sense? Can they do that? Why did daddy disappear before saying peekaboo? Many serious questions remain.

Keyne @keyne-unable.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
This is a masterpiece. How dare a political party plot to change the law, politically. It's dictatorial to do democratic politics about a law which was re-written by the supreme court last year. Presumably without anyone suggesting that change, since that would be political. Reeks of desperation.

You can see in this thread the difference it's made to "the trans debate" to have moved from hypothetical harms and fears to one in which the rights have been rolled back and people have to actually reckon with policy realities. Keep pushing! The tide is looking slack.

I'm an advocate for giving people some grace for how they manoeuvre in public if they are in fact solid behind the scenes - but I have the extreme privilege (/curse) of being 'inside' enough to know who has our back despite any slips, and who doesn't. Most don't and have no reason to trust anyone.

So I think part of it comes from the assumption that engaging in calm asks without power behind them is a trap that leads to... UK labour. And broadly the strategy within which we've seen the left decline to political irrelevance here. Having been out in the cold for so long, why assume good faith?

You and several commentators involved are, I trust that, but I think one of the driving fears behind hitting the 'threaten abstention' button is that those in control and who we hear from most (the yglesiases of the world) are in fact very, very keen to jettison our rights not just rhetorically.

Keyne @keyne-unable.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
You've covered a lot of useful intellectual ground in this thread, esp in delineating the overlapping discourses and explaining the emotional states different folks are bringing to it. This is the bit that I think is missing tho - even as an outsider it's clear that dems aren't on the same side here

Nope, unless you're going back pretty far in the past. Even then though nowadays we have a politics of active transphobia that simply didn't exist at the time, instead being subsumed by gay panics back then. It's qualitatively different now. From fairweather friend to active persecutor.

Truly this turn has had such a negative impact on my general sense of curiosity while On The Internet. Also the world, and aging, but the Algorithmic Swarm preying on my personal desire to know and understand things makes me reflexively want to not know things when it's on those terms!

People seem to suddenly forget that there are system effects. Both in terms of letting stuff slide, and also in withdrawing electoral support. They could get it back! Easily! The demand is clear! I don't think queer people would refuse to back a candidate who apologised and then backed their rights.
010
Keyne @keyne-unable.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Seems like the resulting demand is "you can ask them not to take your votes for granted, but do not, under any circumstances, do anything that would signal that your votes cannot be taken for granted."
120
Keyne @keyne-unable.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
And sorry but this is what "don't take out votes for granted" means. It means that they might be withheld or transferred! So much of this is tone policing *any* attempt to push back against transphobia among democratic candidates.

Keyne @keyne-unable.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Brief notes on today's discourse: - US folk should do whatever they can to avoid transphobia becoming bipartisan consensus. It's so bad. - Punishing and sidelining dems who capitulate to fascist framings is good for long term health anyway - Yes the specifics of the election matter to the decision.

This is why I think the retelling of accurate history is so important. Self ID was dropped by the Tories in 2020 and then Labour in 2023, which was around the time Stonewall was starting to quiet down too.

This manufactures consent for removing trans healthcare because it supposedly undermines the breeding potential of (white british) nuclear families. Looking forward to when they start including a judgemental side note on whether any cis guy featured in their reporting has had a vasectomy.

Sure would be a shame if everyone flooded their complaints inbox about this transphobic, misogynist bullshit. Nobody should be reduced to their capacity for child rearing but the bbc news team apparently thinks that is the most important fact to communicate. www.bbc.co.uk/contact/comp...

This was already pretty clear to be honest, the UK publishing sector has a long long history of pushing completely fabricated misery memoirs whose job is to blend heartwrenching/gory details and the confirmation of people's odd beliefs about poverty or marginalisation www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8Nh...

One thing about the modern commentariat is that their phantams of authoritarian woke 1 allows them to feel like brave contrarians against a progressive consensus that doesn't really exist while in fact weathervaning hard with all their friends and indulging in maximum groupthink.

His efforts, and the efforts of fellow researchers (all of the latter funded by and/or directly involved with the Institute for the Suppression of Homosexual Filth) succeeded in creating a significant public controversy. Some public commentators embraced the same-sex-attraction-as-psychosis argument because they were, themselves, homophobes, others more plausibly because they were incompetent, or because they enjoyed being contrarians, or both. This, despite the fact that the statistical arguments on which these extreme claims depended were demonstrably bogus."

Something tells me that the findings of this study are a foregone conclusion and that the sample bias is going in the other direction... Anyone in that position would be akin to volunteering for a Wakefield study on childhood vaccinations.

Watching the concept of 'woke 1.0' crystallise over the last couple weeks has been fascinating. Ah! A sudden consensus appears from nowhere! How curious. All they want is to be told no, there are no subjective moral standards to which you will be held accountable by the public anymore.

The cold fury this puts in my chest. Gleefully burning rare books - whether they are considered valuable or not - on the altar of hype and profit, siezing and fencing off the intellectual commons to sell back to us, is just disgusting. Someone [redacted] immediately.

Finding someone to argue this from the perspective of the offspring is obviously catnip in the same genre as the interminable "I'm a liberal/feminist/socialist, but..." articles whose job is to be man-bites-dog while exploiting the human tendency to respond to in-group signals for propaganda.

Once you start seeing it through this lens, a remarkable proportion of books, op eds, features, even news pieces can be summarised as "why won't my darling child go back to how they were when they accepted my complete authority over them, before they self-actualised (and got QUEER)"

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

Press regulation now. It shouldn't take more people losing their lives to dehumanisation and vilification in the 'news', not because their stories or misdeeds warranted it but because it gave ammunition for the pet panics of a reactionary media that's lost touch with reality.

The best one of these was the NHS Fife tribunal where the spin that they won was so extreme that everyone from LOTO to the BBC had to walk back their celebrations & claims (respectively) of victory when they realised they actually lost on most of the substantive grounds. Hilarious day.

Also it's part of a campaign called "don't call me queer" and truly, they didn't need to worry about that. Queer is a deliberately fluid and fuzzy term but I am in fact very happy to clarify that being a member of LGB alliance is disqualifying.

This is dire even by political polling standards. Utterly misleading and shoddy about it. And from a *registered UK charity* whose legal objects are "advancing education & raising awareness" and "conducting or commissioning research on equality & diversity issues". They are the GWPF of gay groups.

However, I argue that it goes further than this, breaching not just the right to privacy but the right to the public. If you cannot use the correct facilities and thereby must choose segregation or the potential for violence or neglect, if you will be misgendered daily from birth to death, you cannot be said to be participating in the world on the same basis as cis people.

It is understandable but disappointing when elected politicians defer to polling on human rights issues. It is utterly unacceptable - indeed a dereliction of duty - for the chair of a body whose purpose is to uphold human rights to defer to polling on human rights issues. A scandal.
