New ACE audit report: Singh et al. (1997), one of the most cited trials of resistance training for depression in older adults. Misreporting of standard deviations and impossible statistics led to many meta-analyses having artificially inflated effects. auditclinicalevidence.org/reports/ACE2...

Our UW "rumor research" team is trying to reach a broader audience... we're thinking about trying to build an audience over on Threads, but it's hard to get started in a new digital neighborhood. If anyone is over there and can follow my account (katestarbird30), I'd appreciate the boost.

This is a good illustration of how so much of AI theft isn't indirect (ie, data sucked into a model to train the chatbot) - it's actually **direct** copying, but *enabled* by GenAI. Of course it is: chatbots absolutely suck at creating good, new stuff.

Very cool new paper by @aleksakaurin.bsky.social, Mario Wenzel, @paulaphilippi.bsky.social using some of my K99 data: osf.io/preprints/ps... EMA studies often ask people how they feel several times a day. But when is a change bigger than measurement noise? And does the person actually feel change?

I grew up in a suburb (a good one in MD, not the hellhole of NVA), and there's always a way that downtown gets you. Even this summer with the National Guard and the destruction of the WH, it got me. It is really a special place to be proud of.

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

Yeah, she seems to be doing really cool stuff in that space. And again, lots of UW folks get talk invites all the time (I know my colleagues who are doing work at the intersection of social media and development are swamped), so possible they couldn't do it.

This is ridiculous. The only avenue for fellowships for international scholars has been the K99. It was already so hard to get, and now there is no way for them to come and train and build a career in the US. It will decimate our ability to recruit the best scholars around the world.

In my experience at UW, the press office occasionally touches base with us to ask if we have anything to publicize. I've never gotten an email saying "Hey, I heard you had a cool new study, can we write about it?" Relying on self-nomination might also select for self-promotion and exaggeration.

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.

The Democrats defend the Kennedy Center but not trans people.

I once wrote a paper (that went nowhere) where we talked about the "Aim 1 fallacy" of LGMMs, but you could extend it to all class/mixture papers. It was basically how every Aim 1 is to test whether there are classes, and every Aim 2 is to test what predicts classes. But Aim 1 is meaningless.
041
Kevin M. King @kevinmking.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
And I think you always need to hold the actual classes really lightly. It's rare that I see papers actually doing this, but sometimes they do and it's quite reasonable. I'll see if I can dig around for an example.
110
Kevin M. King @kevinmking.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Yeah, I think that's not a great use of it. We talked about it some in the case of growth models here: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... I think people like them because they're easier to understand. I think you'd need to show that you get better (or not substantively worse) performance.

Kevin M. King @kevinmking.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Meh, I disagree. I mean, if authors are promoting misunderstandings about the method sure. But the method is just doing what it does. It's the users who end up screwing up the interpretation of it. Like back when people using SEM were calling them "causal models".
