my colleague @seanhollister.bsky.social has been all over this story! from his piece this morning: www.theverge.com/tech/896490/...
Changing headlines, and their meaning, makes journalism less trustworthy at a time when powerful institutions are trying to discredit it, and when many news organizations are struggling just to keep the lights on.

We’ve warned for years that Google is prioritizing AI search over the “10 blue links,” and I am frequently frustrated that its Gemini AI search doesn’t encourage clicking through to actual news sources. But I figured that I could always fall back to those blue links to get a relatively unadulterated experience. Now, I have to wonder.

A second memo from Bari Weiss and Tom Cibrowski says CBS News Radio is shutting down. Here's the memo:
Today, we informed our CBS News Radio team and approximately 700 affiliated stations that we will end the service on May 22, 2026.
Unfortunately, this decision means that all positions within the CBS News Radio team are being eliminated. We understand how difficult this news is for our staff and their colleagues, who have worked side by side with us to cover some of the most significant stories of our time.
While this was a necessary decision, it was not an easy one. A shift in radio station programming strategies, coupled with challenging economic realities, has made it impossible to continue the service. We are sharing this announcement now to fulfill our commitments to our radio partners and affiliates, which require advance notice of the service's conclusion.
For nearly 100 years, CBS News Radio has delivered original reporting to the nation-from Edward R. Murrow's World War II reports in London to today's daily White House updates. Our signature broadcast, "World News Roundup," remains the longest-running newscast in the country.
CBS News Radio served as the foundation for everything we have built since 1927.
The coming weeks will be difficult for the team members who have worked tirelessly at CBS News Radio. We are committed to supporting these valued colleagues with care and respect as we wind down operations. They have been critical to our success and remain treasured friends and professionals. We thank them deeply for their contributions.
Thank you all for your dedication and for the compassion you show one another as we move forward.

A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:
Just a quick update from the Twin Cities. (Please forgive the unsolicited message). THINGS ARE NOT BETTER IN MINNEAPOLIS. The media is mostly moving on, Trump is focused on other stuff, BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. More than 2,000 DHS thugs continue to roam the streets, abducting people 24/7, assaulting legal observers with impunity, and routinely denying 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. Drones and helicopters are overhead every day. Hundreds and hundreds of terrified families have not left their homes since mid-December ... relying on the community to bring them food and help with rent and other necessities. (Those people are NOT violent drug cartel sex offending murderers, as DHS would tell you. Most are legal residents or citizens.) If anything, things have just become more stressful and intractable (think trench warfare as a suitable metaphor): The resistance is better organized and numerous, but DHS has become more clever and better at disguise... and the county sheriff's office is increasingly supporting them . Do not let anyone tell you that Homans (the new person in charge of the occupation) is making anything better. Do not let anyone tell you that 700 ICE agents leaving the city has made much of a difference; the remaining force (again, ~2,000) is still larger than the entire city's police force (which is legally unable to do anything). Please call your congressional reps ... especially if there is any chance the administration might listen to them.

BREAKING: Chief Judge Schiltz sets a contempt hearing for Friday in one of the hundreds of habeas cases in Minnesota pending as a result of Operation Metro Surge, ordering acting ICE Director Todd Lyons personally to appear in court and face contempt. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
This is one of dozens of court orders with which respondents have failed to
comply in recent weeks. The practical consequence of respondents' failure to comply
has almost always been significant hardship to aliens (many of whom have lawfully
lived and worked in the United States for years and done absolutely nothing wrong:
The detention of an alien is extended, or an alien who should remain in Minnesota is
flown to Texas, or an alien who has been flown to Texas is released there and told to
figure out a way to get home.
This Court has been extremely patient with respondents, even though
respondents decided to send thousands of agents to Minnesota to detain aliens without
making any provision for dealing with the hundreds of habeas petitions and other
lawsuits that were sure to result.' Respondents have continually assured the Court that
they recognize their obligation to comply with Court orders, and that they have taken
steps to ensure that those orders will be honored going forward. Unfortunately,
though, the violations continue.
The Court's patience is at an end. Accordingly, the Court will order Todd Lyons,
the Acting Director of ICE, to appear personally before the Court and show cause why he
should not be held in contempt of Court. The Court acknowledges that ordering thehead of a federal agency to personally appear is an extraordinary step, but the extent of
ICE's violation of court orders is likewise extraordinary, and lesser measures have been
tried and failed.
ORDER
Based on the foregoing, and on all of the files, records, and proceedings herein,
IT IS HEREBY ORDERED THAT:
1. The Court will hold a hearing on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 1:00 pm in
Courtroom 15 (MPLS) before Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz.
Respondent Todd Lyons must appear in person to show cause why he should not be held in contempt for violating the Court's January 14, 2026,
order.
Petitioner's counsel may participate in the hearing, but his attendance is
not required.
If, before the hearing, the parties file a stipulation indicating that
petitioner has been released from custody, the Court will cancel the hearing and will not require Lyons to appear.
