I have bone conduction headphones so I can listen to podcasts and still hear and spatialize traffic noise. The audio processing headphones add just enough lag to undermine the spatial location perception.

I realise that we're both going off decade - old street view imagery here, so I'll have a look when I'm next I London. I am thinking of a novice cyclist coming through this when it has buses and taxis on, not clear like this. They should obviously stop, but a bus could mask the light.
Farringdon Road raised separated cycleway becomes a white lineWhite line cycleway becomes a bus stop Bus stop with no cycle markings, crossing beyond. White line becomes zigzags and a crossing, with no advance cycle holding box

That's what I was saying, yes.

Kevin Marks @kevinmarks.com · 4h
For a newer cyclist, working out what to do when your separated bike lane vanishes with no signage and you're suddenly contending with buses and taxis could be very scary. That's not an excuse for hitting pedestrians but it is dreadful road design.

Kevin Marks @kevinmarks.com · 4h
Because I am in Sheffield at the moment. I'll have a look next time I'm in London. Have you tried renting a Lime bike and riding through that junction along the Farringdon Road from the north? With a bus behind you? I could navigate it safely because I have been cycling in traffic for decades.

Kevin Marks @kevinmarks.com · 4h
A floating bus stop with a bike lane by the kerb and bike stop lights would help. And Zebra stripes on the crossing too. But there really isn't signage there to show what someone on a cycle should do, and a novice will be more aware of buses than pedestrians. Could you ask TfL to comment on it?

Kevin Marks @kevinmarks.com · 4h
Where Farringdon Road crosses Cowcross St and Greville Street? Looking at it in Google maps, there's a separated bike lane coming from the north that dead ends into 2 bus stops, then truncated zigzag stop markers and no labelled bike box at the junction. That's a real mess.

Kevin Marks @kevinmarks.com · 5h
So yes, people on bicycles should not endanger pedestrians or other road users. This is fundamental. However you can't reduce it to "follow the rules" when road markings are chaotic nonsense.
100
Kevin Marks @kevinmarks.com · 5h
It is impractical to follow all the signage and road cues provided, so you have to improvise and learn which junctions need which behaviour. London is better at providing separated cycleways, but junctions without separated lights are often ambiguous if you should follow car or pedestrian lights.
220
Kevin Marks @kevinmarks.com · 5h
How this mindset comes into being is that in most of the UK, cycle infrastructure is completely incoherent. Bike lanes appear and disappear arbitrarily, sometimes merging with pavements, sometimes vanishing entirely, throwing you into fast moving traffic, sometimes being gutters full of wet leaves.

My friend Mark Cho, co-founder of The Armoury, visited Lovat Mill in Scotland some years ago. He filmed this charming video with Lovat co-owner and design director Alan Cumming, who explains what goes into making tweed. You can see how many bright colors are used to make a "simple" earthy color.

Tweed is such a beautiful fabric to wear this time of year because it produces, in Dolly Parton's phrasing, a coat of many colors. Even a solid-colored brown is not just brown, but bits of red, blue, and yellow to produce something that looks lifted off the Scottish landscape.
There are two photos taped together. The top shows a brown stone building with a brown thatched roof. It's surrounded by green grass, stone walkways, and blue-gray sea. Below is a checked brown tweed that reflects the colors in the landscape above it. There are two photos taped together. The one at te top shows a rocky hillside with green and straw-colored grass, gray rocks, and a tan sandy beach below. The blue waters are crashing at the shore. Below is a green herringbone tweed that reflects the colors in the landscape above it. There are two photos taped together. The top shows a field of green and straw colored fields with bits of purple flowers. Below is a a series of checked brown tweed that reflect the colors in the landscape above it. A swatch book of solid-colored tweeds. The green tweed has visible flecks of red, gold, and blue.
