I'm sincerely grateful to @mltondre.bsky.social, @devingarofalo.bsky.social, @phdhurtbrain.bsky.social, and the peer reviewers for their feedback. Their care and input during drafting and revisions helped me immensely.

In it I argue that Hood's poem is one of the first, most concrete links between coal-power, Blackness, and enslavement.

I'm so glad that my article "Coal and Anti-Blackness in Thomas Hood's 'The Demon-Ship'" is part of the @victorianreview.bsky.social's special issue on energy. <https://doi.org/10.1353/vcr.2025.a985007>. #envhum

It is good! We’re lucky to have had a mild summer thus far. And my book revisions are almost done. Hopefully Georgia has been treating you well?

Frances Trollope, a genre innovator who often gets overshadowed by folks who iterated on her work.

Congratulations! If anything comes up in Northern AZ (or the CO. Plateau generally), I’d be interested in brainstorming a collaboration!

Hey, Bluesky: do you have a class policy for LLMs like ChatGPT? Would you be willing to share with my department? We are interested in personal policies, departmental policies, and/or school-wide policies!

Thank you for the mention! What a fascinating poem at such a critical juncture of both the development and public awareness of geology.

While not an #envhum job, we are working to develop our environmental humanities program, so I hope folks who are interested in art history and the environment will apply.

I’ve not see them cited in these contexts either. I think I just felt the resonance between parts of their critique and the ‘extractive reading’ critique (as you note).

It certainly seems that the metaphor is a bit much. That said, it feels like there is some relationship to Liboiron’s _ Pollution Is Colonialism_ (2021). They argue for anti-colonial science which sees itself as part of a community/place rather than apart, e.g. sustainable vs. extractive.

I did have a good conference! Hopefully you did too? I started with Malm’s chapter on anti-steam poems and then used that to identify other writers/collections. I think Malm even cites one of Jones’ anti-steam poems, but I can’t remember.

Had a riveting end to NAVSA—Juliet Shields showing how Black writers repurposed W. Scott; Ella Mershon analyzing the failure of progress in Tennyson; @benjaminmorgan.bsky.social tracing env. ethic in urban cacotopias; and @lizmiller.bsky.social considering the afterlives industrial landscapes.

A fascinating morning at NAVSA—Mary Bowden critiquing the nativist vegetal resilience in War of the Worlds, Jessica Valdez showing how the Chinese and Chartists were described similarly, and Rachel Teukolsky analyzing the representation of the Haitian revolution in H. Martineau’s work.

Yesterday afternoon at NAVSA was busy for me, so I missed posting about it. Heard a great paper from Jiwon Min on Isabella Bird’s travels in Korea. And I gave my paper on a Chartist poet’s utopian vision of coal and steam.

First few panels of NAVSA done! I was the most struck by a discussion of environmental gothic and weird fiction led by Jed Mayer and @siobhancarroll.bsky.social — are these genres ‘useful’ for understanding environmental crises past, present, or future?

I’m excited to be at NAVSA 2023. Typically, I tweet/skeet/post my way through conferences, but best I can tell that’s not a thing on BlueSky?Regardless, I’ll broadcast what I can and hope that I run into those of you who are here there.

At the moment I'm thinking Daggett's "Petro-masculinity" (2018) and Wilson's "Gendering Oil" (2014) as easier pathways into petroculture. And then maybe pair these with a chapter from Sinclair's _Oil!_ but I'm not certain.

A question for energy humanities folk out there—I've been invited to offer a lecture on petrocultures for a climate change class and I need to chose media to assign. What are some petroculture media (creative, scholarly, otherwise) you might assign to a general audience of undergraduate students?

Well, I was rejected from a grant recently. I know this is hardly a surprising outcome; I’m not in shambles from the rejection. Many thoughtful scholars and strong projects (especially in the humanities) don’t get funding. But as non-tenure track faculty...
