It's time to start talking about the new academic security complex. It is not simply administrators -- there is a revolving door of security experts and a growing industry of private contractors who have captured the minds and fueled the nightmares of uni leaders. I see it every day at USC.

Lost in the shuffle, was the difficulty President Folt apparently has in actually expressing an apology to Asna (our valedictorian). The beginning of her remarks at the Senate meeting at USC yesterday felt like a way to address that call. But they carefully avoided the word "apologize."

I am proud and inspired of our faculty at USC and the action they took today. There is a lot of difference but they’re united in their criticism of our administration and l anger at how our students have been treated. Censure of the provost and president, and call for investigation, a the beginning.

Pulitzer Prize Board acknowledges the "extraordinary real-time reporting" of student journalists covering campus protests. www.pulitzer.org/news/stateme...
As we gather to consider the nation’s finest and most courageous journalism, the Pulitzer Prize Board would like to recognize the tireless efforts of student journalists across our nation’s college campuses, who are covering protests and unrest in the face of great personal and academic risk. We would also like to acknowledge the extraordinary real-time reporting of student journalists at Columbia University, where the Pulitzer Prizes are housed, as the New York Police Department was called onto campus on Tuesday night. In the spirit of press freedom, these students worked to document a major national news event under difficult and dangerous circumstances and at risk of arrest.

Note the common thread b/w the arrests @Columbia and the suspension of the Valedictorian's speech @USC is the language of "security." Universities should be spaces secure enough to have frank and open debate. And above all, where students should be safe expressing their views.
