And 1986 was a time when the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher considered the ANC a terrorist organisation. It's easy to look back now and think little of this 'gesture,' but it was flying in the face of strong UK government sentiment at the time..

On this day in 1993, Nelson Mandela came to Glasgow to receive the Freedom of the City in person. The council had granted it in 1981, when he was still a prisoner on Robben Island, making Glasgow the first city in the world to do so. #Glasgow #NelsonMandela #OnThisDay #glasgowhistory

Labour held a seat it has held since its creation in 1983. The Labour vote was down 3.7% on the last General Election, the Green vote up 22.4%, in spite of the 'Zionism is racism' motion carried at the Green party conference. The voter turnout was 38%, down from the last GE, when it was 54%.

And we both know she will say precisely that. It's a fantastic bit of marketing and media manipulation from Tory-supporting media to get most of us to believe that inheritance tax is a scandal that seeks to rob us all. Remarkable.

Ah, that well known financial genius Eric Trump, right, right. And, when it all goes bang, it won't matter to him, will it? It will make zero impact on his life. Why are you reporting what this nugget says?!

It is true that, according to the OBR, only 4.9% of estates are required to pay inheritance tax? And I'm guessing most of them already vote Tory (or Reform), so why is this seen as a major vote winner? Isn't it basically a handout to those who are already wealthy?

The short thread is worth a read. The idea that a city council would take these steps, and stonewall a legitimate FOI request, is an eye-opener. And, inevitably, it makes you wonder what goes on at higher levels of government.

"...our institutions now are little more than corrupt right wing shams...." Ah yes, unlike the golden age! When we had racist TV, 'no blacks, no dogs, no Irish,' no maternity/paternity leave, domestic violence ignored by police, homosexuality illegal and gay marriage not even on the horizon?

Culture wars - so many easy targets, so easy to bullshit and scare up moral panics - are surely Tory strongpoints? There's *no way* they'll abandon those 'wars' to talk - say - about their 14 years of government, ruining courts, probation services & etc. Oh aye, and Brexit.

So Burnham grasps the big jaggy nettles on the triple lock, social care and Brexit, somehow gets the legislation through, but gets booted out at a General Election. The Tories get back into government, but -- oh no! -- they can't unwind Burnham's reforms!

It's so fishy. His claim that US Intelligence had been monitoring the 5 guys in a van arrested at Fairford -then released on bail?!- seems dubious. Now he's doubling down, removing the bombers, trying to convince us he's ahead of the game with his huge IQ. Trump withdrew the B-1s in a fit of pique!

"I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint." Is a great point. And, I think, a decent analogy. If AI is to make money, if it is to be a viable business, it needs to attain the gobal ubiquity and daily use of smart phones (aye, not just iPhones). Seems...unlikely.

Labour is marginally less crap under Burnham, but it now has leader capable of communicating and appearing human. The idea the Tories can convince Reform supporters and other ultra-right loons to vote for them is for the birds. Burnham can 'win' like Starmer, with little real public enthusiasm.

'Serious politicians' feels like an oxymoron. I'd be much happier with well-prepared journos asking specialist economists, historians, sociologists etc, to explain and critique policies. All we get is 'The thick of it' level to-and-fro. 'Stick to the line! Stick to the fucken line!' ad nauseam.

I've been listening to 'Today' for, god help me, forty years and there's no way it used to dedicate as much airtime to BBC-produced fluff. I don't deny that 'Traitors' is a hugely popular show and merits examination, but why not on 'The Culture show' or 'Front row' or... wherever.

I don't remember that desperate cross-platform promotional stuff going in the recent past. The other thing that, uh, 'grinds my gears' is the wildly disproportionate coverage of random sports for which the BBC still has broadcast rights. 'And now, a 10 minute interview on curling....' Wut?!

When flagship Radio4 news show (Today) runs an excited report on a previous night's BBC TV programme, that's the point that: a) You know the BBC is editorially fucked b) The point anyone with no interest in that programme switches off in despair/disgust. tldr: I couldn't care less about 'Traitors'

I was thinking more about Carrington and Howe as my 'old school' Tories. I think you're probably right, I was trying to Devil's Advocate it, I don't want to be one of those 'It was better in my day' guys. But, dear god, Cecil Parkinson resigned over what, today, would be barely a footnote.

Did we though? Were most politicians smarter and more ethical in 1970-80s? I'd like to think the Tory party had some 'better' players, but it strikes me social media - as well as the ease with which information is leaked and shared - means we can see and judge our political class more easily today.

Hasn't this also got something to do with the 'sort' of immigration that's dropping? As in, its really (really) not just 'the boats' but also includes reduced migration by higher-earners, higher tax payers and foreign students? And, of course, fewer workers from the EU, post-Brexit.
