How are aesthetic theorists and affect theorists thinking about rage bait? It’s clearly a formal and aesthetic strategy. One of the most successful, imho. That success might need some theoretical reflection.

There’s a strange quiescence in all this coverage about the fact that she was previously married to Gavin Newsom.
Since this is a photo of Gavin and Kimberly sexily reclining on a rug, this is probably one of the moments when you’re happy to have low-vision.

When they said “AI will destroy the working class, and maybe even humanity” they evidently meant that it will devastate their own work and their companies’ business models

Tonight we read the heartrending words of those who lost Israeli loved ones on Oct 7th — and Palestinian loved ones in the three years since. We said kaddish for all of them. We refused to compromise on anyone’s humanity. No amount of shouting stopped us. May their memory be for a blessing.

I wish more academics took this history seriously. If they are denying us shared governance, we need to start governing ourselves: faculty electing a president of the university, a supervisor of the Board of Regents, etc.

Almost any ads five weeks out from an election means somebody, rightly or wrongly, is concerned.
020
kennan @kennan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Not really. If you just want the good vibes about your name, it’s far more efficient to run ads in, say, March of an odd numbered year. If you want personal power, you send some of the money you’re sitting on to an endangered or aspirational close race. Then they owe you.

Or no serious ones, anyway. In 1994, nearly 175 years after the Great Book Theft, Hank Payne told an audience at Amherst that he figured that, “at reasonable compound rates,” Amherst owed Williams “at least a million volumes.” And within a year or two the Williams College Mucho Macho Moo-cow Marching Band presented the Amherst marching band with a bill for $1.6 billion in library fines for overdue books.

I’m a historian who does political theory. Political theory is fundamental to debates over justice, and to the shape of actual policy in the past & present. It might seem abstract, but it’s interwoven in the law. Without theory, there is no science of politics. Justice is framed by human debates.

Jigsaw: You see things aren't sequential. Good doesn't lead to good, nor bad to bad. How you play the cards you're dealt is all that matters. Will Shortz: Would you like a hint how to be a better cruiciverbalist? Sequentialism drives interest.

I don't usually point out typos in substacks, but since this is an eminently quotable line in possibly the nut graf, you may want to change "ever" to "never": "And yet somehow the bipartisan anti-MAGA coalition ever seems to materialize."

That the US is reducing its military presence in, say, Germany at the same time makes no sense at all. I cannot comprehend what "military bases" signifies here -- is it expanded power? This isn't even a "is this bad or good" analysis. I can't even understand the desiderata from the US pov.

Definitely the latter. It was astonishingly widely disseminated. In the 1615 sequel (Book II in most versions), the characters have difficulty in their quests because many people they run into have read Book I, and so are self-consciously having fun with them.
