there are many good reasons to go see sinners but one underrated reason is that the music is really fire??? and my favorite queer Smithsonian folkways label ethnomusicologist PhD student JAKE BLOUNT consulted on the soundtrack

Just really smart work connecting some of my beginning ideas to their own experiences working on grants and working with partners and dang I'm just so glad I had the gumption to share it with them

At least it is Friday, folks! I'd like to offer space for anyone here who has lost funding this week - be it IMLS, NEH, anything - to share in these replies what you were working on so folks can hear all the great things now at jeopardy. I will be reposting all of them.

Protest sign with black text listing a subset of words that were flagged for further scrutiny by federal agencies (including “bias” “increase diversity” “disability” “racism” “trauma” “victim” and “women”). In large red letters over top, the words “These words kill fascists” is written, an homage to Woody Guthrie.

like, that is HOW I am a writer and have ideas that are worth writing about. trusting this process and also maybe starting to see how some of the little pieces and ideas I've been cooking on are starting to emerge into discrete articles / classes / conference talks / book ideas (!!??!)

and like, idk, apparently Teacher Action Research is its own offshoot that mostly just shares a name with Action Research, but like they *were* connected at some point and now it's just been so extracted and diluted, bleh
020
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
and has I think in a lot of teaching circles now been flattened to just mean like, doing research out of your teaching experiences, for the purpose of improving your teaching? which like, I see how that is *actionable* research but like, we have really lost something brave and good here besties
120
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
this whole thread somewhat sparked by a teaching conference talk I just went to which took up the idea of action research, which was originally formulated to radically reimagine university research into working with the community to do research to address THEIR priorities/needs
120
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
and part of our responsibility to actually read original texts and folks in context is to call out as reviewers and conference panelists and stuff when people have flattened (whitewashed, I'm tempted to say) the contributions of really radical scholars
140
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
all this to say; theory is great, I love working with theory and talking about it with students, and also it's reallllllll easy to find a compelling piece of radical theory and extract it from its radical context and make it way more boring and palatable and we should not do that thing
120
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
and so as this student and I kind of talked through this theory in a more complicated way, we ended up at some really interesting spots imagining how they could DO THE WORK while in school, partnering with unexpected radical folks in the community
100
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
she means like THE WORK, like when you hug another organizer and tell them that they're OUT THERE DOING THE WORK, like really doing radical good shit for the community
110
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
like she does NOT mean the work just in terms of "the personal/creative/intellectual work I happen to like, independent of making money from it"
100
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
and also I think it's really important to pay attention to, when we're transporting theory around to different contexts, to not kind of defang or lazy-ify it; a huge part of Kynard's formulation of "the work" is like, look, as a Black feminist scholar, I have responsibilities to my Black students
100
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
and like this student and me had a really productive conversation about distinguishing between "the hustle" (which they hate, understandably) and "the job" (that they don't know if they'll enjoy) and "the work" (that they're like, oh yeah, I mean I actually love doing the shit that's good)
100
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
and like, this is absolutely theory, and theory that excels at the thing that theory is best at: helping us organize experience in ways that help us see and act more clearly

like, I just had a super useful chat with an undergrad student struggling with big career thoughts using Carmen Kynard's call to distinguish between the work, the job, and the hustle
130
Kelly Sauskojus @kellysauskojus.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
as someone who teaches lots of first year writing and professional writing I don't always get to work with tons of theory, but sometimes I swear a really useful bit of theory is the most helpful thing in the world if you're confused or overwhelmed by how complex the world is
