I wonder how Cheikh Hamidou Kane’s Ambiguous Adventure is read now, given that I suspect contemporary readers are not placing it within the been-to category. Whatever frame is used, Ambiguous Adventure is a gorgeous book. Wonderful prose.

G’bye master! What a coincidence — I’m currently rereading this novel trying to understand his skill. And he’s gone. Rise in power Cheikh Hamidou Kane. Postcolonial literature has lost a giant of letters.
Cover of L’aventure ambiguë by Cheikh Hamidou Kane« De manière significative L'aventure ambiguë, histoire d'un itinéraire spirituel, porte en sous-titre récit.

(The distorted answer is that Comprehensive Sex Education supports “autonomous sexual rights for minor children,” because providing children with sex education should not happen. Let us keep them ignorant, even as reports indicate that first—and nonconsensual—experiences start before the age of 10.)

k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 05/10/2026
it’s naming things that do not exist! Which official documents where support "autonomous sexual rights for children (of minor age)”?

k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 05/10/2026
It’s a fascinating document, providing just enough right-sounding stuff (seed sovereignty, anti-imperial rhetoric, African cooperation) to lubricate its anti-trans, anti-abortion, anti-lgbt, anti-sex education, pro-patriarchy, pro-heteronormative vision.

k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 05/10/2026
All of this is part of rejecting "Sexual-Social Cultural Imperialism." The Draft Charter appears on no official AU website, so it’s tempting to dismiss it. I prefer not to.

k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 05/10/2026
So, this document—The Draft African Charter on Family, Sovereignty, and Values—implicitly claims that it’s okay for girls and women to get HPV—instead of the vaccine against HPV—because antibiotics exist. Even after we know the connection between HPV and cervical cancer. (Chapter 5.1.r).

We could be pedantic and insist that maize is not indigenous to East Africa—or Africa, broadly. But I think there’s something useful to staying with her sense of indigenous as passed along, as shared.
150
k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 05/10/2026
A Kenyan TikToker keeps discussing maize as indigenous, and contrasts the many varieties she grows with the 2 or 3 varieties provided by mainstream seed companies. By indigenous—the term she uses is closer to traditional—she means something like passed along, shared.

Cover of Up Against the Archive: Experiments in Writing British Empire History Otherwise by Antoinette Burton. The cover resembles a notebook, with the spine in brown and the cover in textured teal that has faint writings with map-like markings and circles. The title is in large white serif text across the upper half. The subtitle is centered in smaller white text, with the editor's name at the bottom in white, small, capitalized text.

(Just as, in another register, I suspect that recording technologies have fundamentally changed how many people experience sexual pleasure.)

k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 01/10/2026
Something about relation—making relations, staying in relations, having good relations—is truncated by this approach to the elder as a recording technology. (I suspect historians have richer ways of thinking through this particular whatever it is that’s nagging at me.)
371
k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 01/10/2026
This prompted by a common sentiment that the loss of an older person—an elder, some say—means a library has been lost. Perhaps. But I am also wary about how the hyper-documenting now might cause us to misrecognize the elder as a kind of hyperdocumenting technology whose material we need to acquire.
171
k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 01/10/2026
And I wonder if our hyperdocumenting now might obscure some of the creative methods we still need to apprehend—is apprehend the term?—the nowness of now.
171
k’eguro @keguro.blacksky.app · 01/10/2026
I suspect there’s something about our hyperdocumenting present that has intensified anxieties about history, archives, memory, the past (add other terms). I do not think the absence of hyperdocumented befores impoverishes those befores. It means we use different methods to think toward them.

Each time I see an announcement of the banning of THE BLUEST EYE, I pick up the book from its pride of place on my desk, open it to a random page, and read a passage aloud, relishing its lyricism. "So when I think of autumn, I think of somebody with hands who does not want me to die."
