This is utterly horrendous for everyone working and studying at University of Brighton, & the community more widely. It also feels like Brighton is the canary in the mine – their unjustifiable 2023 cuts have since been emulated across the sector. Will this removal of workers' rights come for us all?

Well, it’s Sacking Day (to the tune of Tannenbaum), when we learn via Teams calls which one of the 4 of us left is to go. That will leave 3 (from 12) to teach English Language, Literature and Creative Writing and supervise 25 PhD students. I’m sure management have thought this through carefully.

I learned today that some charitable trusts are now nervous about awarding grants outside the so-called Golden Triangle of Oxford-Cambridge-London. They‘re worried about wasting money as universities close departments & make staff redundant. Labour’s HE policy is entrenching elite privilege.

Good news, but the fact that this is only happening now, nearly three years after the cyber attack shows 1) what a huge job BL staff have had rebuilding services, 2) that the BL is underfunded, and 3) the impact this has had on academic research, especially in the humanities.
