Honoured to be selected for the @femsmicro.org Postdoc Summer School in Porto, exploring microbial solutions to the UN SDGs. Huge thank you to the organisers, mentors and fellow postdocs for sharing their experiences and advice! (An entirely reasonable number of pastéis de nata were also consumed)🇵🇹

Throwback to some of my PhD work! We uncovered the antimicrobial activity of tormentil, a traditional medicinal plant, identifying compounds with activity against MDR bacteria and the ability to enhance colistin efficacy. Really proud of this one ☺️ www.microbiologyresearch.org/content/jour...

Bogland plant Tormentil inhibits multidrug-resistant pathogen growth and potentiates antibiotics by disrupting iron homeostasis
The antibiotic resistance crisis has created an urgent need for the development of novel therapeutic strategies to tackle recalcitrant infections. In this study, we identified Tormentil [Potentilla er...

I had a great time chatting with 7th and 8th graders in New York through @skypeascientist.bsky.social! We covered things from antibiotics resistance to what it’s like to be a researcher. Their curiosity and questions really reminded me why sharing science matters 💡🙌

Delighted that our review on resistance to last-resort antibiotics in Enterococci has been published in FEMS Microbiology Reviews academic.oup.com/femsre/advan... (accepted manuscript version) TL;DR: the Enterococci are really good at evolving resistance to antibiotics in new and creative ways.
