If you've been looking for a way to help, a Venezolana friend suggested giving to this group, which is working to get mental health care and social work to women, children and LGBTQ+ folks, who face higher risk of violence and discrimination during catastrophes. www.gofundme.com/f/en-atencio...

Our leaders are now counting on CCS working at a crazy scale, raising the next obvious question: Why? This incredible journalistic specimen, by @maddiestone.bsky.social with support from me, @amywestervelt.bsky.social & @abrahm.bsky.social, provides some key clues. www.propublica.org/article/wedg...

How BP Execs Influenced a Climate Study That Shaped a Generation of Global Policy
BP sponsored an elite Princeton research center to address the climate problem without getting off fossil fuels. Its key work, a paper known as “Wedges,” guided climate discourse for a generation.

More than 3 years and 100 interviews later, I have answers to those questions and many that followed. This interactive, which I made with the fabulous lucaswaldron.bsky.social for @propublica.org with art by Case Jernigan, gets at those first questions. projects.propublica.org/why-carbon-c...

False Promises: The “Solution” to the Climate Crisis That Won’t Work

When I lived in Corpus Christi, TX, the petrochemical industry began pushing forward plans to bury its carbon pollution in the ground all around us and under Gulf waters. My first questions were the obvious: Would it for sure stay underground? And would it really help the climate?

1/ Happy International Workers' Day to all our fellow workers and unions! ✊ ICYMI, our bargaining unit exercised our collective power to walk out on a one-day strike last month, as we fight for a fair contract.
A group of about 40 people stand or squat on a sidewalk. Many have fists raised in the air. Many are hodling signs that read "ON ULP STRIKE", "PROPUBLICA WORKERS DESERVE FAIR PAY", "THOUGHTS NOT BOTS", and "PROPUBLICA WORKERS HEART A FAIR CONTRACT". A group of about 8 people stand on the sidewalk in front of a table covered in signs. The signs say "PROPUBLICA WORKERS ON STRIKE FOR A FAIR CONTRACT" and "HONK". The people are holding signs and smiling.

1/ Today, we overwhelmingly voted to authorize a STRIKE as we fight for a fair contract with @propublica.org.
A graphic reads “92% of participating ProPublica Guild members voted YES to authorize our bargaining committee to call for a strike.” The “92%” is very large. A ProPublica Guild logo is under the text.

Have a question about government records? By Massachusetts law, these are supposed to be open and accessible. All you have to do is file a request. But it's not as easy as it sounds. Massachusetts, one expert said, “is one of the more secretive states.” So we wrote a song about it. trib.al/EWHNLuW

I’ve been in Minneapolis the last few days reporting on the ICE raids happening across the city. This morning federal agents shot and killed a man, identified by the AP as Alex Pretti. This marks the third shooting by federal agents since Operation Metro Surge started in Minnesota last month.

After two years of bargaining, ProPublica management has resisted our proposals to bring transparency and accountability to our disciplinary process. They will not commit to: 1. Following progressive discipline, 2. Ensuring performance improvement plans (PIPs) have clear objectives, 3. A minimum amount of time an employee has to a complete a PIP, 4. Guild representation in disciplinary meetings

A treasured friend is in a health crisis and now a financial crisis. If I think about it too hard my chest fills with rage that GoFundMes are necessary, that our country–the richest that has ever existed–refuses to provide basic care to its people. But here we are. www.gofundme.com/f/gn9rf-supp...

It's simple — @propublica.org workers should not be replaced by artificial intelligence. Our contract proposal specifically says that generative artificial intelligence ("GAI") should not be used to replace employees. Management struck out this entire section in their response to our proposal.
