I think much managerial practice is scientific in that they identify a bunch of variables that are inportant (ignoring others), measure them, create procedures and policies in relation to them, and put in incentives to encourage them.

Also if you watch the solutions that academics often propose to fix managerialism, it’s often just managerialism with some heart. Let’s create systems to measure and so force people to be nicer to each other. It’s never ‘let them go wild and see what happens’.

And all of that is underpinned by a shared scientific method that refuses messiness and humanity. And that reinforces the authority of the ‘scientist’ or ‘manager’ and their right to apply their techniques on others.

Through scientific management - going into workplaces and measuring stuff and designing productivity models. In the work done by business schools in teaching people how business should be run and making consultants. In occupational psychology and health research. That’s all us.

Katie Barclay @katieebarclay.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Academics invented managerialism and are quite happy when it’s being applied to other orgs. But grumpy when it effects us. But I think that means when put in those roles, the tools are natural to us. Measure, control, contain.

A friend has had post-breast cancer reconstruction surgery cancelled 7 times. She is a teacher and needs to arrange a month off work to recover. Two of her cancellations were when she was already at the hospital. This is a problem that could be reported as part of a wider issue with no transphobia!

I’m not sure I agree with this. At G&H for example, we get a lot of stuff about women that has no gender analysis. Part of the reviewer’s job imho is to decide if it can be rehabilitated. And sometimes it can’t/would unfairly make the article something else.

I’ve seen lots of CVs where people have subsequent qualifications to the PhD and they put them in date order as normal, even though the qualification is ‘lesser’. It’s not that hard to spot the PhD in the mix. (Lots of teaching quals, management quals, but also some fun stuff).

In Oz many public parks have bbq set ups, partly to help manage fire risk. (They are well built, contained, on concrete etc). And we have ‘no fire’ days when everyone is banned from setting any type of fire.

Lets people without (large) gardens have bbqs. Getting rid of them means rich people can bbq and the plebs can’t. Why not just ban coal?
