Ballpoint pen, colored pencil, and copic gray marker on paper. A man sits at the table with a painting easel, painting supplies, and a small bowl of fruit. As he paints on the canvas he speaks to someone on his landline phone, “Had a dream that a witch told me to start painting - - yeah, doin’ a little fruit bowl thing.” Artist’s note: I probably should’ve painted the colors in this one rather than used colored pencil. Whatever the witch represents in his psyche he is wise to listen to her.

🧵 Here is the Nebra sky disk, considered by some the oldest known illustration of the night sky. The artifact was discovered near Nebra alongside several Bronze Age weapons and is linked to the Unetice culture, which thrived in parts of Europe... ➡️ apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap18031... 🔭 🧪 #histsci 1/4
A circular bronze disk, about 30 cm across, with a dark green patina from age. Gold leaf inlays form a night sky: scattered round dots represent stars, a tight cluster of seven marks the Pleiades, a full circle near the center is the Sun, and a thin crescent below it is the Moon. Two gold arcs curve along opposite edges, possibly horizons or solstice markers; a third arc at the bottom may indicate a boat or river. The surface shows faint hammer marks and corrosion.

A 🧵 For centuries, Betelgeuse, the iconic red supergiant in Orion, has fascinated astronomers with its changing brightness. Why does its light vary over a ~6-year cycle? Thanks to the Gemini North telescope, we now have an answer: Betelgeuse has a companion star! 🔭 🧪 #stellarastro #galactic
The image shows a vast star field with a faint yellow-orange star, Betelgeuse, at its center. Two white segments radiate from it, converging toward a black box at the upper left. In the box, Betelgeuse appears as a bright orange, almost circular disk, next to its companion, a smaller, less well-defined, dark blue star located slightly to the lower left of Betelgeuse. The companion, detected with the 'Alopeke instrument on the Gemini North telescope, is a hot, young star. This discovery explains Betelgeuse's brightness variability every six years.

The largest photomosaic of the Andromeda galaxy, assembled from Hubble observations, took more than 10 years of data collecting and was created from more than 600 snapshots! ➡️ And it's available for download in really large sizes: go.nasa.gov/44Uvyhc 🔭 🧪
The Andromeda galaxy, a spiral galaxy, spreads across the width. It is tilted nearly edge-on to our line of sight so that it appears as an extreme oval on its side. The borders of the galaxy are jagged because the image is a mosaic of smaller, square images. The outer edges of the galaxy are blue, while the inner two-thirds are yellowish with a bright, central core. Dark, dusty filamentary clouds wrap around the outer half of the galaxy’s disk. At 10 o’clock, a smaller dwarf elliptical galaxy forms a fuzzy, yellow blob. Hubble’s sharp vision distinguishes about 200 million stars within the image. The background of space is black. There are what appears to be steps toward the bottom, mainly toward the middle, which indicates where no data were taken.

Your thoughts aren’t your own if they came without a fight — dig into the dark. Nikon D70 560nm infrared with a Vivitar FLD filter. #photography #infrared #560nm #infraredphotography #IR #jumpingspider
This is a highly detailed, full spectrum infrared photograph capturing a small, brightly lit jumping spider on a soft, pastel-hued surface. The spider is centrally positioned and walking along the edge of a petal or leaf, which curves diagonally across the image from the top left to bottom right. The surface is bathed in pink and peach tones, with delicate golden-yellow accents along the edges, likely caused by the way infrared light reflects off the material.

The spider itself has an almost otherworldly appearance due to the full spectrum imaging. Its body is predominantly a deep, dark blue-black color, with high contrast against the warm background. The legs are semi-translucent and glow with bright orange and yellow hues, revealing fine details such as hair-like textures and joints. The spider’s front two legs are lifted slightly, giving the impression that it is alert or in motion.

Most striking are the spider’s eyes and head region. The spider has several large, reflective eyes which appear as intense, glowing red orbs, standing out vividly against its dark head. Protruding from the top of its head are short, horn-like structures or thick sensory hairs, also glowing faintly in the infrared spectrum.

The overall composition is soft and surreal, with the dreamy pink background creating a stark and vivid contrast with the sharply detailed and vibrantly colored spider. The image showcases both scientific clarity and artistic abstraction, made possible through the use of full spectrum infrared photography, which captures wavelengths of light invisible to the human eye.
