AMAZING article. "When traditional knowledge systems are destroyed, the output of millennia of closed-loop cultural computation is lost. When they are replaced with open-loop information systems optimized for engagement, the result is... drift toward cognitive appeal, away from empirical accuracy."

I had a lot of wins yesterday and I’m laying that off today. Which is fine. Balance in all things. But I felt tired and lousy and decided to drag my butt to bed early. So of course I’m lying in bed at midnight wide awake. 😂

This sounds remarkably like the contents of my pockets during theatre school when I used to empty them out at the end of the night. All that’s missing is a roll of electrical tape.

First up is blood work. It’s a walk in lab. I meant to get here first thing to avoid losing the will to live in a waiting room before the day even started. It is now 11am and I only just arrived, but I miraculously stepped into a COMPLETELY EMPTY WAITING ROOM!

For today, I have ambitiously scheduled four large errands which will gradually take me across the city. They are of varying levels of annoyance.
110
Katherine Arcus @katherinearcus.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The most annoying part is that I’m also knocking off tasks that never even made it onto the list, so the list is not shrinking as quickly as I would like. I am also adding to the list as I go, which is less than ideal. But we soldier on!

I’ve been avoiding my to-do list for the last couple of months, but at the end of last week I hit the point where anxiety about it overwhelmed my need to procrastinate. So I’ve been hammering away at it since Thursday. (I took the weekend off. I am not a monster.)

I had assumed the bedroom would be the worst, but apparently it was the entryway that went the full bad-Halloween-store horror show of cobwebs. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need a shower and an antihistamine. And possibly some therapy. *shudder*

Yes, it's like both celebrities and fairies are this Other Thing, not entirely human, to which human rules do not apply. We tell all different kinds of stories about them, which tell us both how we feel about them and how we feel about us. I think?

That one is a question for @gregjenner.bsky.social but I suspect the answer has to do with the fact that Robin Hood is a legend more than a person. He's a story we tell. If you check out the episode of Untitled History Podcast, it will have a ton more information and context for you.

I missed my usual Rosh Hashona cooking extravaganza because of adventures in asbestos remediation. The house wasn't fit to have family round. But the weather has turned somewhat and I'm craving chicken soup, and my giant stock pot was out for the jam-making anyway. So I'm making a batch just for me.

And then @gregjenner.bsky.social said something that set my brain on fire. It collided with a couple of other thinky-thoughts I'd been having, and I had to write about it.

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights** Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight.
From meteorologist Eric Snitil

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights**

"Heads up birders, I would not be surprised if the biggest bird migration night of the year happens over the next 2 nights. Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight. That is a lot, but the pattern could not be better for migratory birds. A massive area of high pressure will turn the low level winds from the northeast to the southwest across most of the US. The last time we had anything similar to this in the fall was early October last year when a record 1.25 billion birds were in flight. I doubt we get to that level, but I suspect the number will top 500 million especially Monday night which looks to be the bigger of the two nights. You can help by turning off those outdoor lights on big migration nights, and the next 2 nights is about as big as it gets."

Experiment #2 I tried a thinned cookie dough ball, but got essentially the same result. I don’t think it’s actually possible to get anything other than warm cookie dough, because as the centre warms through, the glob loses structural integrity, no matter how thin it is.
A more hotdog shaped glob of cookie dough wrapped around the end of the stick.

Katherine Arcus @katherinearcus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
We got a plate under it just before it lost all structural integrity. Is it, mostly as expected, warm and raw on the inside, with a crispy shell of baked cookie on the outside, lightly flavoured with woodsmoke.
The end of the stick rests on a tin plate. Part of the glob of cookie still clings to the stick but most is resting on the plate.
