Today at parliament some real work happened too. Children and young people with SLCN got to ask MPs questions. Several started with 'I have DLD'. Advocating for themselves. Compared to where we were a few years ago this is incredible. They are the future! #DevLangDis

Frankie's strategies to support people with DLD 1 set the stage. No fluff 2 sieve. repeat without changing the words. As information will need to be processed several times 3 rendering. allow time to convert words to images 4 door. Spoken language can vary greatly 5 road. Finding the right words

Students with DLD talk about surviving not thriving in secondary school. School is hard. Lessons and socially. Others may not notice. Students know what helps them. They have great solutions! Connection with staff and peers is desired, but often challenging. #NAPLIC26

🧵The problem with removing labels (in any context), is that as soon as they go, there is no common language amongst professionals, across schools and other agencies. Everyone starts talking at cross purposes and misunderstanding each other. Everything becomes muddled and confused.

Reading comprehension intervention for DLD. Three groups: text comprehension, oral language and both. All had an impact. One year later oral language group died the biggest effect. Focus on oral language to improve reading!

Strategies for reading in secondary. Reading for enjoyment. Need to keep motivation for decoding, think of games as well as morphology. And for those with language needs, focus on language such as narrative and vocabulary.
