Ireland once again in the dock, for issues that @antaisce.bsky.social & SWAN have long highlighted as being legally problematic. Amongst other serious issues, this judgement highlights that the arterial drainage act is not compliant with the WFD. Time to give that archaic legislation the boot!

Last week I gave you these specimens that are new to the Dead Zoo to have a go at identifying: Image taken by Jamie Maxwell, 2025 These are specimens that were lodged in the collection as part of research identifying them as a new invasive alien species to Ireland. Adam Yates and Chris Jervis both worked out which invasive this happens to be, and it's a bad one.

It's 17 years since I've been on the beautiful Lough Carra, and the unusual white marl that gives the water a distinctive turquoise look is sadly looking very green now on foot of nutrient pollution. Another treasure being slowly lost to us all.

The nature part of the Climate and Nature Fund was to help implement the State's first Nature Restoration Plan but it would appear that healthy, connected habitats and nature rich, productive farmland aren't really viewed as critical to economy.

We first started 'balsam bashing' on the river Nore ten years ago. It was good to get out again this week. This practical #naturerestoration work has since spread to many rivers. It's therapeutic, fun and from our observations is making a difference to riverbank stability and regeneration.
