There is no solar power crisis. No wind power crisis. No insulation crisis. No heat pump crisis. No e-bike crisis. No electric bus crisis. But there is a #fossilfuel crisis. And a #climatecrisis.

Nice juxtaposition!
Screenshot of two skeets - 1st says 'Me watching an intensely emotional film scene: " I wonder where she got that jacket".'
2nd starts "Spotted in an Op Shop* in Aotearoa New Zealand" (not shown - the explanation that 'Op Shop' is a charity or thrift shop)

I think we should start measuring government programmes in Hayden Donnell's 'metres of roading'. Lowering the age of bowel cancer screening to 45? 5 metres of road. A year of Three Waters? 63 metres of road. Reading recovery? 13mm of road.

Yes it could be argued that keeping up with world events is important but alternatively can I interest you in hugging an ancient mossy boulder that looks like a face and quietly listening while it tells you stories from centuries cloaked in mist.
A lovely mossy boulder with a face. I walked past this venerable stone gentleman on Dartmoor when I was beginning to write my first novel, Villager, and it whispered all 104,000 words of the book to me. So now I have to pay it all of my royalties. Unfortunately my ex-publisher stopped paying me royalties last year. Understandable, the boulder was not happy. But now I have a new publisher and the book has been republished. So remember if you purchase a copy you will be helping a boulder to eat, pay the rent on his riverside moss garden, and feed his boulder family.

Excellent point. Replacing public servants with AI is like importing your public service from the US. You spend less money into the domestic economy and shovel more NZ financial assets into offshore ownership.
Who are we paying?
Almost all the serious AI in the world is built by a handful of American companies. The huge computer systems that run it are owned by an even smaller group of American companies.

So when the government replaces a New Zealand public servant with AI, what really happens is this: money that used to be paid to someone living in Wellington, Lower Hutt or Palmerston North gets paid instead to a tech giant in California or Seattle in the United States. That money leaves the country and does not come back.

This reality check by Rebecca Solnit grabs you right from the killer first sentence. Do yourself a favor & give it a read.
The United States is being murdered, and it’s an inside job. Every department, every branch, every bureau and function of the federal government is being fatally corrupted or altogether dismantled or disabled. All this is common knowledge, but because it dribbles out in news stories about this specific incident or department, the reports never adequately describe an administration sabotaging the functioning of the federal government and also trashing the global economy, international alliances and relationships, and the national and global environment in ways that will have downstream consequences for decades and perhaps, especially when it comes to climate, centuries.

We often think of problems as separate buckets: disease, malnutrition, affordability or economic development. But “Climate change is not a separate bucket,” Hayhoe says. “The reason we care about climate change is that it’s the hole in every bucket.”
