In 2023, the Conservatives cut the bank surcharge tax from 8% to 3%. Restoring this to 8% would raise £9 billion over the next four years. Last year, banks made over £35 billion in profits, with average bonuses of £20,000. It's time for banks to pay their fair share.

Some context on strong real pay figures. Today's new data shows real weekly pay up by 3.4%, which is good. The recent strong growth comes after the longest pay squeeze in living memory - real weekly wages are still only just above 2008 levels. Strong real pay growth much needed.
Chart showing real average weekly wages since 2000, with a line showing where they were in 2008 and where they would be if they had continued to grow at pre-2008 rate since then. Real average weekly wages are just above 2008 levels, and £283 lower than they would have been if they had continued to grow at pre-2008 rate.
