Seriously, though, I wonder if they are saving money because a good number of us are just having water instead... I feel really sorry for the flight attendants who have to explain it 800 times every flight.

Very sad to report that @normwilner.bsky.social & I said goodbye to our beloved Winnie yesterday. Although we had more time with her than was expected given her cancer diagnosis, it could never have been enough. She was only 7 years old, and had been living with us for 5. We will miss her terribly.

They are popular which makes them more popular. And despite my efforts, the drawbacks aren't well understood. 😂 They're fun to make, no question, it seems like they avoid "difficult" steps, and there's lots of patterns for them. So of course they're popular.

Also, finishing instructions aren't often taught, and if you don't do it well, it can look pretty terrible, which is very off-putting. So people don't feel confident about their skills, which means they'll do a lot to avoid them. And then there's an issue of critical mass of these types of garments.

Okay, so I could write a thesis about this. I don't think it's the instructions a primary factor, no... (since there's less discipline around good instructions IMHO). I think it's a few things... one is ease of entry for new designers, those formulas for seamless garments are awfully easy to use.
