Speaking English was a political choice, of a self-reliant politician, in this situation that also linguistically was quite impossible to negociate .8/8

Should have President Zelensky been speaking through a translator in his native tongue? Impossible. Why? Because his native tongue is Russian. Ukrainian is his third lqnguage, which only illustrates the imperial history of this region. 7/x

Karolina Krasuska @karolinakrasuska.bsky.social · 02/03/2025
So what about Friday and EFL? President Zelensky was speaking in a foreign language, in a highly charged situation —a situation that the current US president can’t imagine, not knowing any foreign language. 6/x

Karolina Krasuska @karolinakrasuska.bsky.social · 02/03/2025
And yes, we know nothing about language strategies applied by 🇵🇱 president this week, because as a prelude to Friday’s performance toward Eastern Europe, Andrzej Duda was not even in the White House and there was no presser together. 5/x

Karolina Krasuska @karolinakrasuska.bsky.social · 02/03/2025
But Macron, as a power move, was also speaking 🇫🇷and using a translator, giving a clear sign that he’s engaging on his own terms. Which allowed him to interject in English about the European involvenent in Ukraine in a different register, in a less official manner. 4/x

There is also a hierarchy of accents, hierarchy of languages and their „beauty”. Macron this week elicited comments from the president when he was speaking French. 3/x

Karolina Krasuska @karolinakrasuska.bsky.social · 02/03/2025
The current president has a history of „not understanding” EFL accents. It happened 3 weeks ago with an Afgan reporter, which went viral, happened on Friday again with an East European journalist. Both were women, too, btw. 2/x

Coming at the 🇺🇦White House „spat” as a literature and languages scholar: the position of English as a foreign language becomes key. Native speakers vs. EFL speakers, clear hierarchies and possible strategies. A small 🧵from an Eastern European non-native speaker of English

So one thing is being promoted, (university professor), but another thing is to really feel it. The research group Gender/Sexuality made a poster for me showing its feminist genealogies with me at the center. This was so moving! Fyi there are only ca. 100 women univ. profs at the Uni of Warsaw

LGBTQ voters went 86% for Harris. Attacking them, and especially trans people as the reason for losing the election is electoral suicide. They make up 7% of voters. Without them, every single democratic senator that won would've lost.
The image shows a line graph titled "LGBT vote for president" with data for voters nationwide. The graph includes two lines:

A blue line representing the Democratic candidate's support among LGBT voters, which starts at 76% in 2012, dips to 64% in 2020, and then rises significantly to 86% in 2024.

A red line representing the Republican candidate's support, starting at 22% in 2012, dropping to 14% in 2016, peaking at 27% in 2020, and then decreasing to 12% in 2024.

The source is listed as NBC News Exit Poll as of 8:14 PM ET, with graphic credits to Joelle Gross and Elizabeth Schreier of NBC News.

The great Sandra M. Gilbert has died. She was a brilliant scholar, trail-blazing feminist critic, fierce poet, bon vivant, beloved mentor, teacher, & friend. She & her collaborator Susan Gubar made so much possible. What a life, what a force, what a loss. Thank you, Sandra, for everything. RIP
Three women with big smiles on their faces. An older woman is seated at a table. A younger woman is on each side of her. One of them is holding her hand. On the table is a plate with a partially eaten slice of black cake, a glass of wine, some paper, a pen, and a pair of glasses. The women are Marilee Lindemann, Sandra M. Gilbert, and Martha Nell Smith. They are at a reception at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC in December 2017 following a birthday tribute to Emily Dickinson.
