Baroness Hayman says that the law would benefit more than the 1% who may use it. "I think it would give tremendous comfort and courage to many people with terminal diseases, knowing that if the worst comes to the worst, if palliative care can't help, there is an option they could choose to take."

Any woman who has ever received online abuse has some understanding of what Jess Philips is now exposed to, but it is on an entirely different level. It is dangerous to her safety. Yes, it is diplomatically “delicate”. But if you do nothing it is an admission of your own impotence. A capitulation.

I have deleted my X/Twitter account. I urge others to do the same. It can no longer pretend to be anything other than a danger and harm to our democracy. My full statement is below:
A graphic from a phone notes app. The header reads "Statement on X/Twitter". The body reads:

I have today decided to delete my Twitter/X account – It can no longer pretend to be anything other than a danger and harm to our democracy, and I would urge others to do the same.

I’ve always valued social media as a way to connect directly with people — sharing information, listening to different views, and engaging with communities. Platforms like Twitter have in the past played an important role in allowing MPs to stay accessible, promote transparency, and ensure the concerns of the public are heard loud and clear.

Unfortunately, since Elon Musk’s takeover, Twitter/X has become a deeply toxic space that no longer serves those purposes. His actions—spreading conspiracy theories and enabling the spread of disinformation — pose a real danger to democracy and public trust. The blatant promotion of dangerous narratives, including efforts to undermine legitimately elected governments, has become intolerable. Twitter/X has shifted from being a platform for open discussion to a tool for manipulation and division. The same style graphic as previous, with the text continuing as follows:

Musk’s interference in how information is shared — by pushing certain voices forward, reinstating and personally sharing content from accounts that promote hate, while sidelining other voices — has destroyed the neutrality needed for honest, fair public debate. Instead of fostering transparency, Twitter/X is now a platform that actively undermines the values I believe are crucial for democracy.

I cannot continue to use a platform that has become so harmful. After long consideration I have therefore deleted my Twitter/X account.

I’ll continue to find other ways to engage with constituents and communities, and I hope this decision highlights just how urgent it is to push back against the spread of disinformation and the misuse of social media platforms. We need digital spaces that support truth, democracy, and fairness—not ones that tear them down.

This is followed by a signature, and then the author's details - Kevin McKenna MP, Member of Parliament for Sittingbourne and Sheppey.

Not every anomalous media criticism of Sadiq Khan is directly motivated by racism - eg this BBC story. But they are the housetrained edges of a deeply racist set of assumptions which sees negative stories about Khan get loads of clicks and engagement. There’s no mystery to it.

Assisted Dying and 'Coercion'. Currently, those of us who are open to the possibility that we might desire an assisted death, when the time comes, are being coerced into accepting the death we're given, no matter how awful that may be for us and our families. We're denied a choice.

Leadbeater's approach is incredibly affecting and humane. She is reading out a list of stories from people she has spoken to - currently those who committed suicide rather than leaving a disease to take its course. "Hearing these stories is not easy, but it is important that we do."

These stories are really harrowing. The point behind them is that even if palliative care could guarantee that we would experience no pain at the end - which it cannot - it cannot guarantee that we would experience no suffering. It cannot guarantee dignity or autonomy in death.
