How do startups like Anthropic calculate their often-quoted "run-rate revenue" figures? The answer, via @karenkkwok.bsky.social, is even more convoluted than I expected. www.reuters.com/commentary/b...
The $5 billion figure refers to GAAP revenue generated from 2023 through to December 2025, a person familiar with the matter told Breakingviews; the $19 billion is an extrapolation. Anthropic defines “run-rate revenue” in two parts. Use the last 28 days of sales from customers charged on a consumption basis and multiply it by 13. Then, multiply the monthly subscription take by 12, and add the two together.
These snapshots are inexact, capturing or missing sudden consumption spikes or dips. It helps explain how $14 billion can become $19 billion within weeks.

Breakingviews - AI agents have clear mission, hazy business model
In late 1999 the online fashion startup Boo.com launched its website, which featured a virtual shopping assistant. The avatar, known as Miss Boo, was supposed to offer styling tips to customers and allow them to view jeans and shirts on three-dimensional models before buying. The concept may sound familiar to anyone who has recently listened to technology companies extoll the potential of agents using artificial intelligence. Boo.com collapsed a few months after it launched, in part because the website proved slow and unreliable. The technology industry’s hopes are riding on a bet that AI-powered agents will be more successful this time.

Breakingviews - Meta’s Brussels bark may be worse than its bite
Mark Zuckerberg is, among other things, resetting his relations with Europe. Towards the end of Tuesday’s five-minute video relaxing content moderation rules, the Meta Platforms chief executive criticised European technology regulations and pledged to work with President-elect Donald Trump to “push back on governments going after American companies and pushing to censor more”. That sounds bad for the EU’s agenda to moderate content on social media – but Meta doesn’t hold all the cards.

Breakingviews - BREAKINGVIEWS-BHP will try a club deal for Anglo American
Mike Henry will take another crack at buying Anglo American – with a partner. The BHP boss’s previous attempt to buy his smaller rival to become the world’s top copper miner failed in May due in part to his proposal’s complex structure and in part to his unwillingness to pay a big premium. The six-month cooling-off period imposed by UK takeover rules expired at the end of November. But recent developments make another solo attempt even harder to pull off, increasing the appeal of shouldering the burden with rivals.

Artificial intelligence models require vast amounts of data. The companies that run them, like ChatGPT creator OpenAI, require vast amounts of cash. There’s a logical solution to the $157 billion group’s perpetual fundraising quest: the mother of all meme-stock initial public offerings in 2025.
