Oil prices are in turn an input cost to most other stuff (e.g. production & transport of food). The RBA is basically signalling for a wide-scale decrease in economic activity in response. Problem is it's mostly hitting inelastic demand.

I went and made this for ya, it was too good a meme
meme featuring three panels. the top panel is a picture of a headline over Jason from the Good Place. The headline says "AI could be a bubble and is not yet making Australia more productive, Michele Bullock Says".

Underneath is a caption: "I think AI might be a bubble".

The second panel is Michael with a shocked expresson standing next to Janet. He says "The RBA figured it out? the RBA?"

The third panel is Michael touching his stomach. He says "This is a real low point. Yeah, this one hurts."

Generally we expect higher unemployment => less employers pressure to increase salaries (wage growth) The relationship was fairly stable 1998-2012 - blue dots It dropped 2013-2019 - orange dots. it's been chaotic ever since Covid - red dots. RBA insists it's at a new level now.

A reminder to Australians, we'll get a decent solar eclipse in a little over two years. eclipse.asa.astronomy.org.au/eclipse-aust... Centred right over Sydney during the later part of its totality, it'll also cover Bourke, Nyngan, Gilgandra, Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst, Mudgee, Lithgow and Katoomba.
A map showing NSW's path of totality for Australia's 2028 solar eclipse, showing it passing right over a wide swathe of new south wales, including Bourke up the north west, down almost centred over Sydney in the south east and covering frankly the vast majority of the population in New South Wales.

Politicians like Anthony Albanese say stuff like "now is not the time to discuss climate" in the wake of fossil-fuelled disasters because they know that **there is no single better time** to talk about it, and his fossil fuel donors know that too.
News article screenshot headlined "Climate change a debate for later, PM says on Nepal floods," showing a serious middle-aged man wearing glasses and a light-blue button-up shirt outdoors against blurred trees.
PRIME MINISTER: Look, I think on Nepal, there will be time to examine the science and what has occurred here. My thoughts are solely focused, at this point in time, on the families and on the extraordinarily difficult time that we’re going through and offering our support to Nepal. And we'll continue to do that. Those debates will take place. But I don't think, from Australia's perspective, now's the time. My focus is very much on people who are incredibly traumatised by not knowing what has happened to their loved ones.

Excellent piece here www.theguardian.com/membership/2...
A narrow class of people is profiting from our anguish. They know they’re setting our world on fire. They persist because they love neither the Earth nor its people. What they care about is money. Not just enough to get by on. Not even enough to become grotesquely rich with. They want the kind of money that bends others to their will. They seek power, buy it, co-opt it, leverage it and always thirst for more of it. As far as they’re concerned, the rest of us can go to hell – so long as we bend the knee and keep paying them as we stagger towards the flames.

Check again, there's a "will it pay for itself" calculator on the site - if you have the low speed blades, a 4m/s average wind speed is a couple of years payback?

Karan J @karanj.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
There's something like this - tesup.com/de You'd probably go with the Atlas line rather than the full on windmill type. But probably need to have some measurement/estimate of the wind on your roof to see if it's worthwhile, what speed fins you should get, etc. Looks pretty simple to set up though.

Solar though, I would guess it still doesn't make sense where you have shading? East and west faces of my house have trees so it would be low production. That said I should probably upgrade my dad's place, the panels are getting on 10 years old and it's comically undersized for the house.

Yeah I think my battery's size is closer to p10 - in winter I'm off-grid basically on sunny days, so it's just falling short on cloudy/rainy days. But now I'm thinking it's undersized as we look at the rest of the electrification journey for cooking and water heater.

Unusually hot & dry conditions worldwide have fueled a deadly wildfire season, costing lives and destroying communities. “If these infernos don’t bring policymakers to their senses and force necessary changes to grapple with the fossil fueled climate crisis, what will?” writes UCS's Rachel Cleetus:
blog.ucs.org
A World Ablaze: The Climate Future We Feared is Here - Union of Concerned Scientists
Unusually hot, dry conditions across many parts of the world—including in Algeria, Canada, France, Greece, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, and the western United States—have set the stage for the catastrophic wildfire season underway now. Just over this weekend, rapidly spreading wildfires have exploded around Spokane, Washington, forcing nearly 65,000 people to evacuate thus far. Unrelenting hot dry weather, supercharged by climate change, is contributing to the dangerous conditions causing these fires.

Back of the envelope... my 10kWp solar generates ~35kWh on a sunny day May; 3x that with a 29kWp solar array would be 100+kWh? And give it a 10% reserve SOC. Then feed to grid at 15kW/hr based on the inverter size, could smash that out every night. Heck that size solar justifies 20kW inverter.

Karan J @karanj.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
I feel like I undersized mine just a bit because I didn't account for the 10% minimum state of charge they set - didn't realise that before installation. Need some rules of thumb to be established for the relationship with solar panel size and median consumption.
