I hope that the Democrats also have a long term goal of plugging the many loopholes that Trump has revealed in our system via new legislation - after a Democrat becomes president, of course. We now know that mere 'norms' which have worked for decades or even generations cannot be relied upon.

I agree with the point below, except that a second very significant factor that drives our political dysfunction is the profit incentives that drives the media to tell their audiences what they want to hear - on both sides, but particularly on the right. Most of that is in the form of "rage bait."
