Andy Tager died 9 years ago. We still miss him. Yesterday his lebgacy has been crmented in the annals of #CurePF4All when BMS announced that a drug inhibiting LPAR1 met primary endpoint in a phase 3 Pulmonary Fibrosis RCT - the role of LPAR1 in PF was Andy’s discovery!!!! #AndyWasRight #BeLikeAndy

Somehow this International Working Group Report saddened me. We actually do not know more about Acute Exacerbations of Pulmonary Fibrosis now than 10 years ago, same for evidence based therapies (NONE). One must ask why have we not made any progress? academic.oup.com/ajrccm/artic...

I think this is reasonable solution, capping #research, and in #medschool interviews it is pretty easy to tell those who are passionate about it vs. those are just doing it to add a line to their CV But there is still a misconception that pre-meds/med students NEED it, not sure how to help with that

4/n so obviously banning med school research won't do anything. Research is not confined to med school & students don't create the problem, programs do. Solution is simple: Cap the number of papers, abstracts and experiences listed in application and require verification And there's more:

3/n Turns out that it's not only research - residency applicants now report up to 200 (!) volunteer experiences. So we have a research 'arms race', and a volunteering arms race? or may be its a performative differentiation arms race? I sure think so.

I see his point on the arms-race that is racking up publications just to get a residency, but hospitals w/ embedded clinician-scientists have better outcomes and I always say that Nobel prizes aren't won by doing meta-analyses - deep understanding of pathophys are desperately needed.

5/n I agree with DGlaucomflecken that research exposure is not essential to practising medicine, but IT IS ESSENTIAL for medical research. We do not have enough physician researchers and MD/PhD programs alone won't supply the need #ScienceMatters

2/n The research arms race is real but confined. Median publications for most specialties is 1-4. Neurosurgery, Plastics, Derm & Ortho account for more than half the applicants with >15 publications - in other 19 specialties it's 2%. #ResearchHotTakes

1/n The numbers DGlaucomflecken cites are right - I confirmed with NRMP report. Time framing is NOT. NRMP puts no time window on these counts; college, gap yrs, prior grad degrees all count. Hard to believe anybody publishes >50 papers in med school.

KaminskiMed @kaminskimed.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
I listened to the DGlaucomflecken #ResearchHotTakes episode & read the NRMP 2026 report. My conclusions: - Numbers are correct. But. His framing is not. - Research arms race real but limited. - The "ban med school research" solution is misguided See detail below:
