The message this week is clear. The UK needs to have a reliable & responsive system for slavery survivors to enter the NRM & access protection. No survivor should be turned away because of a lack of capacity. Deputy London Mayor Debbie Weekes-Bernard agrees this needs to change. #AntiSlaveryDay

Today, the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner explains why resourcing the First Responder network is essential. The framework exists. The capacity doesn’t. It’s time to act. We need organisations to be able to apply for the role of a First Responder. #AntiSlaveryDay #NoSurvivorTurnedAway

The West Midlands Anti-Slavery Network identifies survivors and prepares referrals to the National Referral Mechanism. But they can't make NRM referrals or provide the same safeguarding response they would like to. Across the UK survivors are struggling to access the NRM. It's time for change.

The NRM should be there for everyone who needs it. When someone is already vulnerable, being unable to access protection can leave them at risk of being exploited or trafficked again. We need more organisations able to act as First Responders — and we need them to have the resources to do it.

The National Referral Mechanism (NRM) is supposed to provide protection to people who have experienced trafficking and exploitation. But what happens when someone can't access the system designed to help them? They are left at risk of harm, including being re-trafficked. It's time for change.

➡️ Here at Kalayaan, we’re one of only nine Non-Statutory First Responder Organisations so we can refer a suspected survivor into the NRM. But the number of survivors in need of safeguarding far exceeds the help that’s available: www.kalayaan.org.uk/campaigns-2/...

The modern slavery system is harmful by design. ➡️ Barriers to referral are preventing survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking from getting the support they need and leaving them at risk of re-trafficking. Find out more: www.kalayaan.org.uk/campaigns-2/...

Our community campaigning group of migrant domestic workers are leading the way and pushing for change ✊ Change happens because communities organise, because people speak out, and because survivors and those with lived experience refuse to be silent ✊
