Yup, it's an insurance company now - but it was originally what we would today call a mutual aid network for immigrant families in a minority religious expression within Christianity.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Sometimes it's about the texts, sometimes it's about the shared experience, sometimes it's about the community, sometimes it's about history, and sometimes it's about shared formation, or the shared hope. I don't think not sharing all those things puts a stop to belonging or self-identification.

Even more in regards to cultures. The reality of life, politics, missionaries, etc. means that someone shaped in the Church of Denmark in Copenhagen will probably think differently and believe differently than someone in the (also Lutheran) Batak Christian Protestant Church in Indonesia.

I'm a Lutheran. So was Kierkegaard, and so was his often quite fierce opponent Grundtvig. Both of them worked very hard to speak, decipher, translate, and above all share faith with others who also understood themselves as Lutherans. But belief looks different in different people.

In it - the author notes that people often say someone is "very" religious if they are extremely strict. But that's really reductionistic. People relate to the texts, to the assembly, and to their Lord differently. But what look like different beliefs are often more like different hermeneutics.

The Plain Dutch were the Amish and Mennonites. The Fancy Dutch were the Lutherans and the Reformed. One fun little relic of this divide in Pennsylvania - some older restaurants are named “Plain and Fancy” to market to their generations-past clientele, and indicate PA Dutch menu options.

Worth noting that by this point, that for all the talk of its predecessors you might hear in Lutheran circles, the ELCA is older than any of its immediate predecessor bodies in America got to be.

The ALC was generally the inheritor of 19th century immigration-wave Lutheranisms, mostly in the Midwest and West. Garrison Keillor stories come from that wing. The AELC were the people kicked out of the LCMS for being willing to interact with the historical-critical lens of biblical scholarship.

The ELCA was a merger of the LCA, ALC and AELC. Each of those were themselves the result of complicated and sometimes arcane mergers and divisions. The LCA was generally the inheritor of both colonial-period Lutheranisms and high-church 19th century Swedish immigrants. Very ecumenically minded.
