Thinking about my unironic use of "gadzooks" as an exclamation of awe and delight. Other options I considered included good god (too religious), gracious (too genteel), and good gravy (too thanksgiving). Accepting alternative recommendations!

Listening to a scientist describe working with a piece of cutting-edge technology and they mention that they are humbled by the machine on a regular basis. Gadzooks. How much different would science be if we allowed ourselves to be humbled, even just periodically, by the wonder of our work?

In case you’re wondering if society is still moving towards progress, there’s someone on this city bus waxing poetic about the benefits of the shower beer.

I’ve been thinking about this—vi is actually older than I am, so I’m imagining Retro Kate as me at 10 years old typing on my family’s old Commodore. I’m not mad about that at all

Things I did not expect from work at age 42: I'm in a Zoom meeting and am feeling emotionally stifled because emojis are not enabled for the chat. 😣

I find it absolutely fascinating that Zoom frequently adds a dollar sign to numbers in the millions, even if a unit is not mentioned.

I attended a medium-sized regional uni as an undergrad bc it was financially feasible. I didn't realize till I was a postdoc that faculty/attendees of Ivy League/prestigious schools view it as an exclusive type of club that automatically puts someone at an advantage.

But in both of the cases I recall, it felt like they were actually saying “it’s so cute you think you’re right! You’re in this on your own though, and it’s going to be fun to watch you fail.” I can’t imagine this had any other intention on their part than to shut down the conversation.

I’ve had a few people say it too me lately, and it’s always been after discussing a point of contention or disagreement. My interpretation might be different if it were in another context, especially outside of a difference of opinion with the other person.
