I saw a presentation today that pointed to problems with the costs of AI (clearly extracting resources is its goal) but reframing around this question is essential: who owns the AI dividend
Such a temptation must be rejected. Higher
ed must, instead, ask the same question Marc Watkins has proposed for secondary education:
Who owns the A.I. dividend? Technology firms see the university as a gigantic data farm; they are not invested in our students or the learning process, only in harvesting the attention of an entire generation of users, who will be addicted to their product for the rest of their adult lives.
Even worse, these students will be subjected to brutal calculations—based on the data stolen from them in college-to determine their worthiness for job interviews, the validity of insurance claims, or eligibility for parole.
Why, after all, has a consensus so quickly emerged that we have a crisis in teaching? Is this not more rightly described as a crisis in learning?
Or, more aptly, as an attack on learning?

There is a suit against Trump to prevent him from painting the stone-exterior Eisenhower Executive Office Building white. That structure is not much beloved but at least shows off its expensive quarried wall materials, which are low-maintenance and require only repointing and cleaning.

i really do love reading my undergrad public history students’ final self reflective essays on how their understanding of the field and their goals has shifted throughout the semester. it is a true joy and important to remind myself about, especially when so much can drain the joy from teaching

No one in my Bluesky circle needs to hear this, but Black history is American history. The Greensboro lunch counter is a place where brave Americans defended freedom and equality against bigotry. It represents my patriotism; it is patriotic to demand and shape an America that lives up to its ideals.

Trump orders ‘ideology’ removed from Smithsonian. What about NC sit-ins exhibit?
We fact-check a report that the Trump administration ordered pieces of the F.W. Woolworth lunch counter from Greensboro to be removed from the Smithsonian Institution.

hi, are you doomscrolling? So many things are chaotic and unsettling right now. But staying up late doomscrolling will also make things harder. Try to do something offline, go to bed early and charge your phone away from your bedroom. You still deserve time to adequately rest and recover.

P.S. There are avian flu outbreaks in many countries right now, and yet most (I did not say “all” because I haven’t done a survey of the 100+ countries with outbreaks) do not have the runaway egg prices that we are seeing. This is illegal price fixing. It’s just happening in the US.

I wish more people were talking about egg prices as less of a “muh egg prices!” thing and more about the fact that there is an organized egg cartel that is illegally price gouging and almost certainly illegally price fixing and reaping massive, gigantic profits.

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.

The new Trump administration has illegally removed far more people from their jobs because of speech and beliefs in the last month than the entire list of cancelled or pressured people (many of whom were criticized, not fired) compiled by FIRE and others over years. It’s not remotely close.

What we’re seeing is not the pendulum swinging back toward the right after the left went too far. We’re seeing a moral panic, a society-wide assault on a phantom leftist who wants to ban Dr. Seuss and arrest you for using the wrong pronouns and put kitty litter boxes in classrooms.

Targeting trans people, Black people, immigrants etc is not a “distraction” from fascism, it IS fascism. It lives in complementary relationship to destroying democracy, because democracy is inherently about participation of minorities.

genuine question—people are resigning in protest of some federal orders, but would it not be better for some (if they have the privilege and i know that’s a big if) to stay and just not follow orders that are illegal? i’m seeing people calling these resignations a win, and i’m not sure i see it?
