A recent paper argued that there is no visual binding problem. I disagree, and wrote a response... journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... Related demonstrations can be found here... staff.psy.uq.edu.au/~uqdarnol/JS...

Food for thought: AI probably can’t reliably generate visual illusions such as this. (I am sure it can generate plenty of things that *could* be illusions but how would it test it without a full working model of a human perceptual system?)

The footsteps illusion-like pausing and sticking illusion The rectangles in the upper half appear to move to the right and stop periodically; however, they are moving to the right at a constant speed in the same way as the rectangles in the lower half.

Some people say we don’t build beautiful things anymore and, like, lol. Motherfuckers, we built this:
A graph from Our World In Data showing a precipitous drop in child mortality starting in the late 1800s going from an average of 48% to global rate of 27% in 1950 to the 2020 infant mortality rate of 4%, with some countries having a rate as low as 0.3%

This story just keeps going: Giant octopuses of the Cretaceous were probably the top ocean predators of their day. They were up to 19 meters (60 feet) long, snacked on plesiosaurs and mosasaurs, and were probably quite intelligent. Sorry we missed you! 🧪 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Body size estimation of Late Cretaceous octopuses.
The graph shows an allometric relationship between the length of the jaw and mantle in long-bodied species of extant finned octopus. The name of the corresponding species is shown along each growth curve. The sizes of N. jeletzkyi and N. haggarti based on their largest specimen are indicated by black vertical lines. Reconstruction of these two species, the extant giant squid, and gigantic vertebrate predators in the Late Cretaceous are shown with their maximum total length.

Once upon a time I just admired nudis and sea slugs. But it was not enough. Now apparently I'm creating an R package to celebrate their colour palettes? 😅 First up, my Sydney fave, Hypselodoris bennetti. #rstats #nudibranch #dataviz 🦑🐙🧪 #marinelife #invertebrates
Close up with a beautiful nudibranch on a rocky reef. The lower half of the image is a palette of swatches made from the nudi's vibrant colours.

This head is spinning continuously, but we see it rotating back and forth... ...presumably because of our strong prior expectation that faces are convex. This is a very nice example of the Hollow-Face illusion promoted by Richard Gregory: www.richardgregory.org/experiments/
