It's possible to recreate valuable software with Claude or Codex, but it works better for people who were already on board with TDD. If you were going to start something like this, wouldn't you start with some results that you wanted as test cases?

Jeff Baker @jwbee.bsky.social · 9h
That approach seems to have fundamental, structural problems. The value in a long-standing code base like Adobe's would be that it has millions of test cases. They know what they want. These guys don't know what they want.

I dunno. It appears to be image editing for people who don't care about results. I looked in blur dot rs, the radial blur clamps intervals to < 64, which would mean at 1000px image the samples would be 27 pixels apart? This is just more superficial slop that doesn't work.

As long as it's going to be hot enough to leave the windows open, I have to demand that skunks knock it off. Thanks.

Hrmm. I really like the compact TQ motor and I wouldn't have thought it was cool if some Eurocrat had standardized the chonky Bosch frame interface.

Jeff Baker @jwbee.bsky.social · 12h
If these things had been standardized by statute ten years ago wouldn't we have missed out on a huge variety of innovation?

With the same qualification about my reading of the record on its face, it also appears they have paid $7 million in application fees altogether, so far.

The way I read the record across their 4 different building permit files is that the demo permit was not ripe until they got this "phase 1" permit sorted, and they changed the details several times with many back and forth rounds. That unblocked the demo process.

I personally don't.

The demand isn't that high. The builders can shop jurisdictions. So the cities/counties are offering things like equipment tax abatements to convert some worthless dirt into tax-productive land, often with the property taxes prepaid for decades in advance.

But people are universally satisfied with market pricing when supply is plentiful. Nobody thinks tomatoes are sold at auction, but they are.

Very nifty science recognized today. One of my early summer jobs involved assembling photo detectors for neutrino experiments and I still have warm feelings for this field of research.

I think removing an entire category of capital from the market would probably have the effect of reducing production and raising rents.

This seems somewhat ironic since I'm locked in a low-grade legal battle with my city, Berkeley, to acquire a report that you wrote and they refuse to share with the public.

I make them. Data comes out in arrears, so trip data for HSB won't be available until November. The whole system including SF had 608k trips last month, +33% annual growth rate.

Agriculture isn't perfect just because its products are edible. Google offset 100% of the water needs of their Las Vegas facility by converting 1500 acres from flood irrigation to drip irrigation. That's right, flood irrigation in Las Vegas, and they didn't take it out of production, they fixed it.

Yeah it's really weird because I get nothing from any of Meta's products. It feels like the scale of these things is completely out of proportion to their utility. Which is the opposite of how I feel about Google; their products are useful and their buildings are normal.

What's notable? The expansion stations at Clark Kerr and on Hearst at Gayley are now top-ten stations. It's clear that campus is still under-served.

Every school facility fee nexus study in California says the exact same thing. They're not even wrong about the slope of student generation on the margin, but they are wrong about the Y intercept, the amount of housing production that produces no net students is surprisingly high.

Waymo was operating under special rules last weekend in SF during Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. It had designated drop-off and pick-up nodes that seemed to have been developed in cooperation with either the SFMTA or the festival. Concentrating the job of driving onto organizations unlocks this stuff.
