Apparently if the "automatic updates" setting is enabled in the Google Play Store and the Samsung Store (shows as just "Store"), promoted apps can get bundled and installed, so it can help to disable it

I'm a metallurgist, not a mechanic, but the worn sections don't look like fatigue failure to me, maybe abrasion instead. Possibly once enough of the teeth towards the ID wore down, the remaining tooth segments started getting overloaded, initiating the crack you can see at the root in the
