Iceye launched two new satellites. To my understanding these are their first non-polar orbit 🛰️ Inclination was not stated in the press release, but it hints to a 45-deg inclination. With this they can better serve lower latitudes, where most of the 🌍 population lives. www.iceye.com/press/press-...

Iceye 🇫🇮 has closed a $65M extension of April’s funding round. This enables Iceye to continue expanding their ISR capabilities. Finnish goverment holding company Sodium added 15€M to their previous investment of 40€M. www.iceye.com/press/press-...

This is mainly for my Finnish speaking followers. I wrote a chapter about space and Arctic in this new book geopolitics in the Arctic area. There is not much literature in Finnish about military use of space and its strategic significance, thus it was pleasure to join this "small club" of authors.

1/2 Russian SAR-satellite was launched yesterday. Previously Russian SAR-capabilities have been very limited, but now they have launched several new SAR-satellites. This is unfortunate for Ukraine and other western countries as SAR can take images also during the night and through the clouds.

Woomera Manual is a good read for everyone interested in military space activities and related legal aspects. There aren’t that much truly new information, but it is a good summary multiple different treaties etc. and it aims to clarify several ambiguous aspects.

Satellites can carry only small portion of data that goes through sea cables. Satellites give some resilience and backup for critical communications, but they are not alternatives for sea cables. As Aaron said in LinkedIn, repair capability and route diversity are needed for sea cable contigency.

Finnish space strategy is being updated and this is a good article about that. The current strategy is from 2018. The new strategy will be released later this year and should be in valid until 2030. I hope it does also sufficienly cover space security and defence issues as the current doesn’t 🛰️🇫🇮

Ukrainian sources believes that Russia is using satellite imagery from U.S. companies for targeting. Not a total surprise as there has been some earlier coverage about this and Russia has very limited own ISR capabilities. A good read nevertheless.

USSPACECOM’s Global Sentinel -exercise has been concluded once again. The exercise focused on space security and space safety issues through space situational awareness and information sharing between nations. GS24 had participants from 26 nations, 🇫🇮 Finland included.

Finnish KuvaSpace establishes a subsidiary in the United States. This will likely make it easier to sell services to local governmental security authorities. The company has ambitious goals for launching 100 satellites during the 2020s. Hopefully, the plan will be realized 🤞

Iceye X-1 is expected to re-enter the atmosphere during the next two days. It was launched early 2018 and it in active use only for about 6 months. Nevertheless, it was the first of Iceye’s satellites. First Finnish commercial satellite and second 🇫🇮🛰️ overall. A big milestone for 🇫🇮 space activities.

The German armed forces' SARah 2 and 3 satellites were launched yesterday from the United States. Now all three satellites of Germany's new SAR imaging constellation are in orbit. For the ones launched yesterday, the commissioning phase (LEOP) has started and actual use will begin after that.

If the news is true, Ukraine has destroyed Russia's space related ground infrastructure in the occupied area of Crimea using long-range fires (UAV and Storm Shadow missiles). This is part of Space warfare, that is preventing or disrupting use of satellites to support military actions on Earth.
