Recently, I did a wonderful interview with the indefatigable @emilystjams.bsky.social about trans people's online information environment and why there are very strong incentives to spread panic. It was a wide-ranging discussion that I think is more relevant than ever.

I think one important aspect of Jane Doe case that is important is the role civil lawsuits can play for abuse survivors. The criminal justice system sucks and frankly so does the whole legal system -- still, this is an option that might be available to some of you or girls/women you know.

For all the patriotic reverence federalism gets it's gotta be one of the dumbest parts of our civic system. Honestly fuck states' rights, fuck state police power, fuck state independence from the federal government. One country, one law, one system.

Part of what got us here was tolerance for the ethical insanity of "we can compromise b/w the people who believe abortion is murder, and who believe forced pregnancy is slavery, by letting the states decide;" it doesn't work any more than letting the states decide if you can own a human being works.

One could argue that it is exactly the undue belief in organic processes that leads to this happening continually. My bias is: a humane, inclusive, and moral world requires active cultivation. Algorithms are good, actually.

"Cynical legal tactics" is a weird way of saying "a court of law decided that her identity should be shielded due to the possibility of public backlash preventing her from holding rapists accountable" And you second-guessing that is pretty much following a single agenda: pro-rape.

TBH there's a good reason for steakhouses in particular to call their cuts by their raw weight. Yet another reason to order rare: you actually get more steak by weight.

All said it's probably not exactly "1 out of 14 pounds raw brisket purchased makes it cooked and bought to the customer's mouth" but honestly it's probably not far off.

Ostrich and 12.5k others @justostrich.com · 29/09/2026
Rejection is one half ("Just because it's bought doesn't mean it's fit to cook") and waste is the other ("Just because it's cooked doesn't mean it's getting bought at full price")

Ostrich and 12.5k others @justostrich.com · 29/09/2026
Also mass-to-mass cost in particular is multiplicative because you lose a mostly-fixed fraction of the mass through rejection, trimming, and cooking (because water has mass and evaporates during cooking).

A "Wojak" meme contrasting two approaches to programming.
On the left, a crying, angry stick-figure character with glasses yells, "NOOO I WANT TO MAKE AN ELEGANT COMPLEX SOLUTION THAT HANDLES EVERY EDGE CASE GRACEFULLY." On the right, a calm, blonde "Chad" character sideways-profile replies, "JUST PUT THE CODE IN THE BAG BRO."

What's necessary is not some eugenic panopticon that would make Mengele blush, it's bringing Epic and Oracle to heel by forcing them to talk natively to small practice software, such that you don't have to wait 2 weeks for medical records each time you bounce between specialists for cancer or w/e

Kennedy's policy is obviously eugenic not just because he's a eugenicist, but because the scope is much broader than what's actually needed: 1. An open standard EMR 2. An open standard EMR exchange authorization protocol 3. An open standard EMR exchange protocol

The reality is that economic privilege is neither having to improvise a shitty non-nutritious meal based on "what you have on hand" nor is it having to run your household ruthlessly efficiently like a naval vessel.

This gives me the same ick as when comedians strongly identifying with a culture as part of their brand make the joke about how their culture are the only ones to keep a bag of plastic bags under the sink or reuse ziplocs as if it's a nigerian/midwestern/sagittarius thing and not common frugality
120
Ostrich and 12.5k others @justostrich.com · 29/09/2026
We could point out the recurring pattern of precariat/poverty behaviors spanning between deliberate frugal organization and less-cost-effective adhoc improvisation that always arises in these discussions or we could fight about which of these is the "real struggle", I guess we're doing the latter.
