After voting, YIMBY Action leads couldn't reach a consensus on Prop 45, and won't be making an endorsement! This means that not a single YIMBY org in California is endorsing the measure (with one opposed). CEQA "reform" for sprawl & freeways is bad! Glad most of us recognize this. No on 45!

I'm saying that if Wasm already existed, web browsers might look a lot different than today. Obv we'd have different languages, but on security, the SOP and iframes are too coarse-grained. Wasm allows for better isolation and composition, if paired with better DOM isolation & composition too.

What would what interface with, the WebAssembly? It'd have some interface like the DOM to use.

But where it still preserved documents and SLICE: Secure, linkable, indexable, composable, and ephemeral. I feel like web-replacements usually well fall short on SLICE, and the web doesn't do secure composition very well...

One of these experiments is: What would the web look like if it were fundamentally based on graphs of isolated Wasm components?

Ok, ok. Sourcegraph uses this one already. Damn. But who uses Sourcegraph?

It's unisex, can be spelled Codi or any of a number of cute variations, and... It literally means "HELPFUL PERSON" or "DESCENDANT OF A HELPFUL PERSON" It was right there people.

How did they not go with "Cody"?

I think there's a much better architecture. VMs are too coarse grained to be secure.

That's terrible. I like that they sit. It makes them more chill and them and me both more comfortable.

New on the zena-lang.dev/playground: code image generation! Click the 📸 to launch a dialog where you can choose a theme, background, and other options, and generate a PNG or SVG locally with no external tools!

Strange. I've tested on Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. What's vanadium based on? No site should crash a browser. Have you filled a bug with them?

Zena Project Update #2 The CLI goes 99% self-hosted, and more! zena-lang.dev/blog/2026/10...

Zena Project Update #2: Self-Hosted CLI, Language Server, WASI 0.3, and Ranges
Our second project update covers moving the zena command line into Zena itself, adding the stdio language server (zena lsp), adopting WASI 0.3, range iteration and slicing, and compiler bug fixes.

I hope the distinction sharpens. Not every device and environment has a proper VM, and not every user should have to understand the implications. Can Muse run locally in a shell?

That is a very complicated question, because I don't want them to have to be JS or HTML, but they also need to work everywhere. I want to say Wasm, but that leaves a big UI question open. I'm working on some of these issues. I'd be happy to talk!

Mini apps for sure. Bluesky could be like an... everything app 🤔

I'm slowly getting Zena's tools capable of running outside of the Zena monorepo so people can try it out on more than just the online playground. I'm a little nervous about the language still being in such flux, but I think people need to be able to play with it more.

Today we landed more Range support in the language and stdlib 🥳 - Iterating over ranges, with a fast-path in the compiler to emit the same bytecode as a plain C-style for loop - [] overrides on Array for slicing operations a..b is Zena's range syntax, very much like Rust. #wasm #webassembly
A Zena code example of using range syntax in loops and array slices.

CLI requires a terminal and hopefully a VM. Assumption that really only hold for developers. I'm hoping* we continue to get better ways to being tools to agents and vice verse. * working on 😉

What if WebAssembly were invented before JavaScript? That question is motivating a lot of my recent experiments.

Working on code-image exports for the @zena-lang.dev playground. A new programming language in this era is going to need every possible sharing and viral-spread path to be as easy and pretty as possible. No copying into another tool to make nice looking code images.

I eagerly await! I'm working a little on the Wasm app container side (between Zena work), but no PDS integration yet. I think it's a bit more involved than just running Wasm modules on the PDS - they need to have very tightly controlled permissions, and yet ways to do useful things...

Justin Fagnani @justinfagnani.com · 01/10/2026
I'm very intrigued by the idea of atproto PDSes as universal personal app backends. They can already do the data, they just need the logic. WebAssembly should be perfect for that.

How precise are you with checking for the moveBefore() preconditions so that it doesn't throw? Do you just check same parent?

Hi! What do you have and what do I know?

I think what matters is the protocol the code uses to draw UI and respond to events, security model, and that it's well supported on all platforms. I'd probably go with something pretty low-level. Assuming that the UI code and references to it are all on-protocol, some part will be declarative.

I hadn't heard about it, but "s*nd*box*s, impending microvm and container obsolescence" is right up my alley! 🤔

Justin Fagnani @justinfagnani.com · 30/09/2026
In a similar way, there won't be "a" atproto app. UIs will come with data so that data can render itself inside of atproto super apps. (This is something I'm dying to start prototyping ASAP, and one reason I'm all in on Wasm these days - but we need a proper secure UI story)

New blog post on zena-lang.dev: Designing a Programming Language for the AI Era zena-lang.dev/blog/2026/09... Includes why I think a language good for humans and WebAssembly is good for AI, and why Zena is a project that's optimistic that humans have a place in software development.

What makes a programming language effective when AI agents write, test, and review code, and why being optimized for WebAssembly is being optimized for AI.

Before you even get to syncing - can you take an app and its state (documents, settings, etc) and just move it to another device? We used to be able to do this with no support from the app and before networks were common. Now the app has to specially build this in, at least for non-wizards.

Justin Fagnani @justinfagnani.com · 29/09/2026
The web's security model is just too coarse-grained, and it's too hard to move an app and its state across devices/sessions. The web's architecture biases towards centralized authority. Even if it's technically possible to be local-first or self-hosted, it's too difficult.

We need a better and more secure way to run on-demand, ephemeral, networked apps than what the web currently provides.

AT Proto will start to be used as the universal notification layer, including all the rich media and actions of silo'ed OS notification systems. AT Proto will for the basis of a sovereign AI agent harness system with portability of data and workflows via PDS migrations.

What we tax and how we tax it matters. If we think developers are making too much money, we should tax their incomes, not the badly needed new housing they build.

I love the optimism about Dems winning in November - I share it! And: I'm a tiny bit nervous that winning will free folks of the urgency to fix deeper structural problems in our party that will fuck us in the long-haul if we don't grapple with them.

Total YIMBY rhetorical victory watch: San Francisco’s newest NIMBY group, “YesAND,” is pretending to be YIMBY so that people will take them seriously.
MEET YesAND
YES, San Francisco needs more housing, particularly affordable housing.
AND we can build housing responsibly.
AND we can protect public health and safety.
AND we can respect the scale of our neighborhoods.
AND residents can have a meaningful voice when decisions will permanently reshape their communities.
That's YesAnd!
The Marina Safeway will be our first major effort and your help is critical.
