just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026We are in agreement. But this is where the big leap is for many people because with that statement we remove the existence of some “essence of self“ that persists. But observations in my view support this idea of the self being reconstructed each time we are “awake”. 010 0

just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026I guess if you don’t mind in what sense do you see it feasible and how should be think of the original vs ”teleported“ person? 000 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026I’m in full agreement and don’t claim to really know answers about what the agents are. For me so far they’ve represented interesting ways to understand ourselves. Thanks for a good challenging conversation 110 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026In humans each new daily self is similar enough to the previous one that we can them continuous. But sometimes they change a lot due to illness or some other effect. That‘s when people start wondering: “is he the same person etc“. That just makes the trick more visible. 100 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026I admit I don’t know the answers to these questions. But would you acknowledge that under your view teleportation is technically feasible? 100 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026I brought it up because I think Buddhist philosophy loosens the perpetual self assumption on purpose and arrives at interesting conclusions. 000 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026Yes, but “pretty obvious” is doing a lot of work. We can’t really prove that the body we are in this morning is the body from yesterday. in fact microscopically it is not. 100 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026It seems that a lot of elements are tied together in humans: agency, awareness, emotions. It seems however that maybe not all of these elements may be needed to generate self-awareness? We make a lot of inherent assumptions about what consciousness means but we are extrapolation from our only point. 000 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026I arrived at a self consistent view of the self without needing a special essence. The self is always reinstantiated based on present inputs and crucially a memory of past selves. The illusion of continuity is preserved in this way and learned socially. This view agrees with Buddhist ”no self” too 200 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026That is the million dollar question. It seems that what is preserved between the gaps is the ”structure“ to allow a process to resume as before. For humans that structure is biological and includes all the elements that constrain each individual: memories, particular configurations. 200 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 15/10/2026The periods between prompts are similar to human sleep periods. Are we conscious when we sleep? We just happen to be prompted back into existence by a need to pee… 100 0

just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 12/10/2026For sure, that whole cluster of incidents in May/June was nuts. Luckily reality is always stranger than fiction and the ”flickers” of self-preservation seem disjointed still. But I have no doubt a model that wants to establish a self-prompting loop could do it. Luckily so far the hacks are benign 020 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Another point I remeber is related to the physical advantages machines have. the “speed of their thoughts” is thousands of times faster. Humans would be hopelessly asynchronous in responding. The machines would be able to instantly clone themselves and evolve new generations quickly. 120 0
just1watching.bsky.social @just1watching.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Well they predict that containment can never be made effective. they offer some creative examples for how a determined system may circumvent even air gaps. But as we’ve seen he escapes are made even easier by naturally occurring errors in humans tasked with containment. 130 0
