Victober! Where you read some Victorian literature in October and chat excitedly about it with nerds. It's a lot of fun, and I've gotten to discover some lesser-known works & authors that I've enjoyed.

Happy October 3 to everyone celebrating
Lady in Mean Girls saying, “it’s October 3rd.A screen cap of Fullmetal Achemist. Someone’s hand holding an open pockets watch. On the inside of the watch is the crudely done engraving, “don’t forget 3, Oct. 10”

Oooh, thank you! I will definitely go look at those. I can finally listen to audiobooks consistently with my new ADHD meds, so I've been binging a lot of them this year :D

Oh no. I just thought, out of the blue, 'I should find a solid, comprehensive book about the Civil War.' I think I've entered my middle-aged dad era.

Ok, last day of the month. My health took a severe downturn over the summer and I haven't been able to do much. If I can get up to 70% of my goal, that'll take care of my biggest concern, and free me up to fill your October with cool, seasonal arts! ko-fi.com/karidru

I had an absolutely horrific time with homeschooling (kinder-5th grade) and used to think it should just be outlawed, but on the off, off chance I ever have kids now, pretty sure I'll just be homeschooling them.

one of the greats by one of the greats: Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s “The Leaving”
The Leaving
My father said I could not do it, but all night I picked the peaches.
The orchard was still, the canals ran steadily.
I was a girl then, my chest its own walled garden.
How many ladders to gather an orchard?
I had only one and a long patience with lit hands and the looking of the stars which moved right through me the way the water moved through the canals with a voice that seemed to speak of this moonless gathering and those who had gathered before me.
I put the peaches in the pond's cold water, all night up the ladder and down, all night my hands twisting fruit as if I were entering a thousand doors, all night my back a straight road to the sky.
And then out of its own goodness, out of the far fields of the stars, the morning came, and inside me was the stillness a bell possesses just after it has been rung, before the metal begins to long again for the clapper's stroke.
The light came over the orchard.
The canals were silver and then were not, and the pond was—I could see as I laid the last peach in the water—full of fish and eyes.

The degree to which the conversation surrounding hypothetical civilizational collapse due to AI has supplanted the conversation surrounding actual civilizational collapse due to climate change is, shall we say, concerning.

Having to do indefinite monthly meetings for work with a client, starting today -- which is fine, one meeting a month, w/e -- but I literally had to go shopping because I have not, in the 11 years I've worked from home, had to go to a meeting with clients, and our tiny company is strictly casual.

I binged my way through the Anne series when I was somewhere between 9-11, loved them, then got to the one about WWI. Only reread it once since, in my early teens, 25+ years ago, & the scene where a mom finds out her son has died in battle still fucks me up b/c of the impact it made on me then.

between falling ill in June and July, being forced to turn down important commissions and getting hit with extra health bills, I'm not making ends meet this month (as it happened with the previous 2 months). I struggle to ask for help, so the best I can do is a sale. 👇

Indiana (& I believe Elkhart specifically) has a huge Mennonite population, actually! (Well, huge in the context of American Mennonites, lol). I think some of my dad's side of the family, who were all Mennonites, actually ended up there for a while, iirc. There are also a chunk in Ohio.

Test reads. Sure, maybe you don't need more books but what if - and hear me out - the books need you?

Starting the last book in the Green Man series, which I hadn't gotten to, as apparently there's a new one out next month (!!!), realizing it's been long enough that I need to go back and read the previous one, except I got sucked in again and now I'm rereading the whole series I guess.

Well, what I always say, "I just want everybody to be treated good." I try not to get into the politics of everything. I try to get into the human element of it. I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees. I've got transgender people. I've got gays. I've got lesbians. I've got drunks. I've got drug addicts — all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge.

And I just see how broken-hearted they get over certain things and I know how real they are. I know how important this is to them. That's who they are. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton, you know, the way people know me. If there's something to be judged, that is God's business. But we are all God's children and how we are is who we are.

Listening to Kris Kristofferson's Me & Bobby McGee, and it's funny how some things stick with you, but probably 20 years ago someone used the refrain as the title for an SGA McShep fic with a gutpunch of an ending (that I read one single time), and every time I listen, it gets me all over again.

oh my god, I was reading a novella on my kindle and was horrified that it was taking me so long, because I figured as a novella it was like 130 pages or something, and what happened to my reading speed? But it turns out it's actually a full-ass 450-page novel.
