"Something wrong, Rey?"
She shook her head, mouth suddenly full of cotton, unable to take her eyes off him as her breath quickened.
"Not hungry?" He straightened, no longer leaning over her, and she sucked in a ragged breath, relieved and yet wanting to pull him back in. Ignoring her rather confusing reaction and internal battle (because there was no way he was unaware), Ben shrugged and crunched a crisp, making almost aggressive eye contact as he sucked salt and oil from his fingers. It wasn't until he chuckled that she realized she had licked her lips.

And suddenly they’re kissing, really kissing, messy and passionate and devouring, like he can’t get enough of her.
Like he doesn’t want her to stop or leave, not ever.
Like he doesn’t want her to go to bed, unless it’s with him.

She is small, he sees at once, this hostage to fortune sent to him by the Bang family delegation, her steps faltering only a little as she proceeds down the aisle to join him at the altar, her face pale even more than it should be in the moonlight as it shines through the lace that covers it. He thinks she may reach his shoulder at most; tiny, delicate, her form overshadowed by her honour guard as they hulk around her, escorting her, scurrying her along to move her towards him with more haste than grace.

That's it, she's tired, that's all this is, the thousand pins poking at her skin like fire from the inside.

"You're not eating, m'lady?" the man at her right hand asks, his voice a surprisingly gentle, deep grumble, the tone of it solicious she'd not expected from the werewolf she'd agreed to marry, sight unseen, and though she doesn't dare to tear her eyes from the hands she's folded in her lap, she does dare a smile.

“Thank goodness you’ve come,” Rey said, dropping her voice into a hush, though no one else was with them. Her hands twitched in her lap, folding then unfolding. “I’m in a frazzle, and I need your good sense.”
Rose’s mouth popped open, then she leaned toward Rey and squeezed her forearm in her friendly, affectionate way. Her brown eyes were gentle, even as they snapped with humor. “I was not aware you thought me in possession of good sense. But I do appreciate the confidence.”

In that little void of theirs, he cedes all control to her. He feels it slip away from him the second her thighs tighten around his hips. The constant, threatening hum he always feels in the darkest depth of his chest disappears. He expects the monster inside of him to revolt, but it does no such thing. It retreats.

It purrs. It coils into a small ball at the back of his soul, its smoky tendrils stroking his heart like velvet instead of biting into it with sharpened teeth.

Rey’s nails scrape across his shoulders with a stinging pressure that fills him with liquid heat. He likes the pain she gives him; he wants more of it. He wants her to sink her claws into his very essence, to carve her name into the very thing that makes him who he is.

The bookshop smelled of mildew, used tea leaves, antique paper and something more fetid, which might have been mouse droppings. More often than not, when a customer managed to push their way through the heavy oak front door and ring the little brass bell above, the first thing they did was wrinkle their nose.

But Benjamin liked it that way. Despite the faded gilt hand-painted sign above the smoky windows (Benjamin Solo - Occult Bookseller), he was not greatly interested in selling his volumes of magical arcana. He didn’t need the money, and he treated most interested buyers who approached the long gloomy register as unexpected bores who were disturbing him from the pages of a half-rotten tome.

Still, he did not appreciate it when books began to go missing. Especially not when he realized there was a pattern to it: that the books disappearing were all from his personal collection of dark magickal volumes that were never meant to be sold to the general public, books that were in fact illegal under international magical law.

Worst yet, Ben was sure he knew who was taking them. The little witch with the freckled nose and fox familiar who had, over the last two months, proved more annoying than any customer in the last decade, accosting him with questions, staring at him with wide hazel eyes until he was forced to lay down his book and tell her, with the tone of teacher admonishing an over-eager child, that the volumes she sought were unavailable for purchase.

A man returning from (music festival) war, Rey thought, and bravely resisted the urge to snicker. Instead, she clambered onto Ben’s lap and arranged herself like his personal throw blanket, his face cupped between her palms. He cocked an eyebrow in response.

“Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.”

“Hmm, but you’re smarter than that, Benjamin. Dam claims you’ve been a little—well, bratty and morose were all used at various points in the conversation. Irascible too. He’ll probably deny it, but I’d bet brunch that he had WordHippo pulled up on his phone.”

The thin line of Ben’s mouth momentarily tilted into something verging on a smile, but her husband was too stubborn to give up that easily, and he settled back against the couch cushions with a scowl.

“He’s a goddamn tattletale.”

Shadows lick along his spine and down his legs and he knows he can’t hold them off for long. Taking on his true form is the only way to stop the pain.

“I won’t hurt her,” he chews out, growling the words into the still air. “I won’t, and you won’t make me. That is the difference.”

As the darkness consumes him, the ravens croak in unison. Their message rankles him but he says nothing.

“What choice do you have?”

Kylo looks to Ushar who nods and descends upon the scene, observes as one of his closest knights takes out the trash before ushering the girl up to where Kylo holds court. She plops in the booth across from him with a huff, crossing her arms over her chest and looking petulant.

“What’s your name?” Kylo asks, lighting a cigarette and leaning back, resting his arm along the back of the booth.

“What’s it to you?” She spits out with a scowl.

Kylo snorts and from the corner of his eye Ushar shifts his weight. Kylo just observes the girl for a moment, lets her squirm under his scrutiny, if she’s capable of doing such a thing. She’s clearly not here for the attention or his good favor. Either she’s ignorant of the life attached to this club or she’s looking past it for some other gain.

“What are you staring at?” She practically growls and he can’t help the way he smirks. He’s not sure if she’s very brave or very dumb but he’s betting the former.

Ben blinks at the bag for several moments before he reaches out to take it. “You didn’t have to get me anything.”
“You gave me things,” Rey gestures at the clothes she’s wearing. A wrinkle appears between his brows, and she really, really doesn’t want him to mention that it’s not the same thing; no matter what words he uses, it will only serve to highlight the differences between them.
“Think of it as a gift for both of us,” she suggests as he lifts the jar out of the bag. “Since you keep making me fancy sandwiches.”
One corner of his mouth quirks upward. His lips part as he reads the label on the small glass jar. “Blackberry jam with thyme and honey.”
“They had samples and it was the best one,” she explains. “Well, I also liked the jalapeño jelly—” he doesn’t need to know all this, Rey “—but the jam seemed like it would be better for sandwiches.”

Ben gives one of his slow, thoughtful nods. He looks up from the jar, dark amber gaze holding hers before dropping to her lips.
“Thank you,” he murmurs. His lips curve again, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he adds, “If this is a request for me to make ‘fancy sandwiches’ tomorrow, consider it done.”
Rey almost protests that it’s a gift and he can save it for a special occasion if he wants—but that would undermine her earlier claim that it’s for both of them. “Well, I’ll never say no to fancy sandwiches,” she quips back, finding herself grinning as his smile widens.
Whenever Ben smiles—really smiles—it’s like his whole face lights up, with all his attention focused on the thing that’s brought him joy. It’s beautiful. He’s beautiful.
He’s still holding the jam, but he’s looking only at her.
