I opened an article on Acrobat and when Acrobat AI assistant prompted to summarize it, I accidentally clicked "view summary" instead of closing the box and it was wild. It kept saying "Colombian Exchange" when the article very clearly said "Columbian Exchange." LOL. So smart.

I'm working on my Spring US #FoodHistory syllabus and (re)reading "The Price of Bread: The New York City Flour Riot and the Paradox of Capitalist Food Systems" from 2014. The riot happened in 1837, but the rioters' cries for "bread, meat, rent, fuel! — their prices must come down!" seem evergreen.

I really wish more people realize the conservative crackdown taking place at public universities affects way, way more people than the overstated and overdramatized issues at the Ivies.

Being raped should not be a price women have to pay for partying. Drinking and doing drugs does not automatically mean you consent to sex of any sort, or anything else, for that matter.

I was doing what I thought were the finishing touches on my Fall B classes when I remembered that between the Spring and the Fall I had to switch to the new edition of the textbook for one prep so now I have to change the slides and test banks. Thankfully the book's organization stayed the same.

If the highest authorities in our universities are using AI to do their work how can we, as faculty, even attempt to get students to grasp that using AI to do their work is not acceptable and is cheating, not to mention it's stopping them from developing many important skills? It's a losing battle.

I made a couple of small 100% rye sourdough loaves (tourte de seigle) yesterday. They are curing and will slice them tomorrow. Can’t wait to dig in. The rye is NY-grown, and stone ground less than 1 mile from my apartment in Brooklyn.

Sad to see Tartine on this list. You know who's not PE backed? Me! Línea Bakery, my microbakery, my passion project, my second job, has been built with my own blood, sweat, and tears. I'm at the Battery Park City farmers market almost every Sunday 9am-2pm. If you're in New York, come buy some bread!

One moment you're young and carefree, backpacking alone across Egypt, no cell phones, no tech, and the next you're in your kitchen at 10pm measuring the pH of your sourdough starters with lab-grade equipment.

You can buy a $480 box to keep your $60 rye loaf. This whole thing has to be some kind of social experiment or maybe performance art.

I read about this yesterday as I got home from picking up 25 lbs of freshly milled Hudson Valley rye from NYC's only stone mill, which is a five minute drive from me in Brooklyn. I know how much the very best rye flour you can buy locally costs. I know the labor involved. This loaf is not worth $60.

I was looking to go see Coyote vs. ACME this weekend and I'm horrified at the cost of going to the movies. $70 for three people to just get butts on seats. Nevermind concessions. Plus, everything has to be booked ahead and has assigned seating, all of which really kills any sort of spontaneity.

"Postpartum" has entered the colloquial lexicon and it drives me crazy because people keep misusing it. "She had postpartum" (often used derogatorily). Yes, everyone who delivers a baby has a postpartum period! It literally means after birth. What you mean is postpartum depression. Just say that!

I was on a group Zoom call where one of the participants was sharing his screen. He accidentally shared the one where Gemini is ingesting our call, summarizing it in realtime, and offering reply suggestions. I didn’t even know that was a thing! So even when talking to a human, it might be a bot.

So, my kid just started college in a CUNY school today. Last week he went to get the ID card and the ID system was down. Today he was told it would work again some time in September. WTF? The school requires ID to enter the buildings so in the mean every new student needs to sign in instead.

I'm constantly torn between "I should write an article. I should turn my dissertation into a book" and "what's the point? There are no jobs and the end of my VAP appointment will probably be the end of my academic career for good." Felt despair; might delete later.

“If you want research led teaching then at a minimum you have to allow teaching staff time to *read* and incorporate new research” I say every year as I object, again, to a workload model that allows 50mins prep per 1 hour teaching.

It's been 5 days since this fiasco started. Marley Spoon has taken thousands and thousands of people's money, not fulfilled their end of the contract, and cut off all customer service. Some people are receiving boxes with nothing but the ice packs. At this point this is willful fraud and theft.

Question for the academic hive mind. As I’ve talked about ad nauseam, I recently earned an Associate in Applied Science in Culinary Arts and a certificate in bread baking. Is that something that I should put in my CV? I’m a food historian, which matters, I suppose. My field is US/Colonial America.

Marley Spoon, the meal kit company, royally screwed up this week's orders for customers all over the country. It's so bad that some people got only a huge box, cooling packs and all, with only panko in it. Most of the items for my three meals were missing. One meal "kit" had only chicken broth.

Today I mixed, fermented, and shaped 35kg/77lbs of sourdough, which is 36 loaves of bread, plus some brioche dough, by myself in my NYC apartment kitchen, using my own two hands and a small spiral mixer that can only do 5kg at a time. Things were learned.

When it inevitably comes out that McConnell hasn’t been conscious since his collapse on June 14, let’s all remember that the Senate Majority Leader and Whip said they’d talked to him the day after he got CPR and that he was “engaged” (both of them used that exact word!) and would be back soon.
