Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 14hI opened an article on Acrobat and when Acrobat AI assistant prompted to summarize it, I accidentally clicked "view summary" instead of closing the box and it was wild. It kept saying "Colombian Exchange" when the article very clearly said "Columbian Exchange." LOL. So smart. 110
Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 13/10/2026I'm working on my Spring US #FoodHistory syllabus and (re)reading "The Price of Bread: The New York City Flour Riot and the Paradox of Capitalist Food Systems" from 2014. The riot happened in 1837, but the rioters' cries for "bread, meat, rent, fuel! — their prices must come down!" seem evergreen. 050
Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 13/10/2026I collect vintage sewing pattern magazines and the Germans did it very well. And still do, but that's neither here nor there. I have one from the early 1920s (antique instead of vintage, I suppose), and it's entirely in Fraktur. Definitely an experience. Should be noted, I don't know German at all. 070

Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 06/10/2026My son is in college now but I was in college and then grad school pretty much his entire life until 2022. I could only really work when he was in daycare, and later in school. Never on weekends and rarely at night. It was hard, but in many ways it forced me to have an OK work-life balance. 110
Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Every time I open a sewing pattern in PDF format Acrobat says "This appears to be a long document. Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 16/09/2026This is my first market season (ends on November 22nd), and my goal as I expand is to transition entirely to local flour, not just for the specialty ones. Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 12/09/2026You can buy a $480 box to keep your $60 rye loaf. This whole thing has to be some kind of social experiment or maybe performance art. 020
Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026What I think this is is a marketing ploy. They are getting all this chatter about the ridiculousness of the price for the loaf, which will drum up business and will get people to come in and buy one slice of bread with toppings, their real sellable product. 130
Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026I read about this yesterday as I got home from picking up 25 lbs of freshly milled Hudson Valley rye from NYC's only stone mill, which is a five minute drive from me in Brooklyn. Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026After seeing this yesterday, I will never again agonize over whether I'm charging too much for my products. Maybe I'll even increase my prices a dollar or two per loaf for the next market season. 040

Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Is this why people are no longer going to the movies? Juneisy Hawkins @junehawk.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I was looking to go see Coyote vs. ACME this weekend and I'm horrified at the cost of going to the movies. $70 for three people to just get butts on seats.
