Different people have wildly different experiences of different stages of parenthood. Someone just referred to the infant stage as “cute Hallmark movie” while I remember standing in my kitchen in tears because I couldn’t get the Hobbit to sleep for a full day. I remember hallucinating from lack […]

Great thoughts here... "But “efficiency” is not the point of life…living, and experiencing every bit of what living means, is the point of life. And I sometimes, when I read statements about how Suno has “solved” music or whatever, I think that the AI bros just…don’t actually like being alive […]

No one is coming to save us. There isn't a big single hero. That's a good thing. Following, trusting in singular persons is part of the problem. Keep your heroes at an arms distance. The durable way out is the one where we have to save ourselves.

#Parenting pro-tip: start slowly removing unused toys from your kid’s room and donating them. This will allow time for charity shops to sort through them and have them available for Christmas shopping AND ensure you have space for the new flood once the festive season comes around.

Over the past 3 years we have gone through a metric shitload of second hand baby and toddler clothes. One thing that still amazes me is how many people clearly use very strongly scented detergent to wash them. I’ve just done a load of laundry with hand-me-downs. We do not use scented soap. And […]

When did job ads become a thing? Like, writing out a job description of sorts, sending it to a paper listing etc? I'm reading an awful lot of them lately for... reasons... and it made me wonder when it started. Surely no one was writing them in the 1850s, you'd just send word around town you […]

A false stereotype that drives me nuts is that city people are less in touch with the outdoors than countryside people. I cycle to work every day, dropping off the Hobbit at daycare ok the way. It’s just under 7km all in all. It’s a distance that many people in cities do without it being […]

I kinda knew this, but it still blows my mind: "The hydrogen in your body and present in every molecule of water came from the Big Bang." From today's APOD: science.nasa.gov/image-article/apod…
science.nasa.gov
APOD Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. # Where Your Elements Came From **Explanation:** The hydrogen in your body and present in every molecule of water came from the Big Bang. There are no other appreciable sources of hydrogen in the universe. The carbon in your body was made by nuclear fusion in the interior of stars, as was the oxygen. Much of the iron in your body was made during supernovas of stars that occurred long ago and far away. The gold in your jewelry was likely made from neutron stars during collisions that may have been visible as short-duration gamma-ray bursts or gravitational wave events. Elements like phosphorus and copper are present in our bodies in only small amounts but are essential to the functioning of all known life. The featured periodic table is color coded to indicate humanity's best guess as to the nuclear origin of all known elements. The sites of nuclear creation of some elements, such as copper, are not really well known and are continuing topics of observational and computational research. **APOD's main NASA site ismoving:** From apod.nasa.gov to science.nasa.gov/apod **Tomorrow's picture:** Sun triple Date: | September 14, 2026 ---|--- Credit: | NASA GSFC's SVS Authors & editors: | Robert Nemiroff, Jerry Bonnell, Cecilia Chirenti, Keighley Rockcliffe A service of: | ASD at NASA / GSFC, NASA Science Activation & Michigan Tech. One of the most misrepresented aspects of parenthood is bedtime. In fiction, it is a lovely bedtime story, a smile and a soft kiss good-night. In reality, it’s an hour of anxious going back-and-forth, telling your kid to go back to bed, no-it’s-not-play-time, asking for mom, asking for dad […]

Some thoughts on Prague before I leave it: Super loved it. Very walkable and cyclable city. Public transport is a dream. The buildings are gorgeous everywhere you look. The locals are kind and friendly. The whole city is clean. They have babies climbing TV towers.
Prague TV tower. It’s made of three quarters that marge into one 3 quarters of the way up. It has a few rooms protruding out straight out of the space age. Statues of giant babies are stuck to it, the babies seem to be crawling up and down the tower.
